Description

T. STIEGELMEYER.
ABRADING AND POLISHING APPARATUS.
APPLICATION FILED 001a. 1914.
Patented Oct. 26, 1915.
THEODOR STIEGELMEYER, 0F I-IANOVER-W'U'LFEL, GERMANY.
ABRADING AND POLISHING APPARATUS.
Application filed October 8, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TI-IEODOR STIEGEL- MEYER, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Hanover-Viilfel, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Abrading and Polishing Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to polishing or abrading tools, for use in that type of polishing and abrading apparatus provided with radially movable tools, which tools are forced radially outward by the operation of the centrifugal force so that they come into contact with the surface to be abraded or polished.
The invention further relates to improvements in or modifications of that class of such devices for which I made application for Letters Patent in the United States. Serial No. 808820 dated 26th November 1913, in which the polishing or abrading tools, in addition to being radially movable are also circumferentially movable.
It has been observed in practice, that with tools adapted to move in the manner last described, the ends of the tools after a short amount of use become worn into a convex or spherical form, which is due to the universal movement of the tool. The result is that the operative parts of such tools after a short amount of use lose their taper, and the bevel which they first possessed. This is a defect in the apparatus which is not to be under estimated and the object of the present invention is to remove this defect.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented @a 2c, 1915. Serial No. 865,686.
According to the invention, the polishing 40 or abrading tools are provided with a longi tudinal perforation, or in other words are formed with tubular shafts, in such a way that although the front edges of the tools may become worn away, such tools have always a sharp taper, due to the edges of the inner and outer surfaces of the tools.
The subject of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing according to one method of carrying the same into eifect, Figure 1 being a section of the drum of a polishing or abrading apparatus provided with tools made according to my invention, and Fig. 2 being a longitudinal section of the tool itself.
The tool 0 is provided with a perforation i, so that the forward or operating edge A: of the tool, in spite of the wear of such tool remains very thin and consequently sharp.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America is In a polishing and abrading apparatus, the combination of a rotatable hub having a plurality of apertures in its periphery, a plurality of tools retained in said apertures and adapted to move radially by centrifugal force, each such tool being formed tubular for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I aiiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
rnnonon STIEGELMEYER.
