TONGUE-SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,854, dated May 11, 1886.
Application filed February 17, 1886. Serial No. 192,235. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. MARVIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seneca, in the county of N emaha and State of Kansas, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Tongue-Supports; and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a top view. Fig. 2 is a vertical section. Fig. 3 is a side view.
My invention has relation to tongue-supports for vehicles; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and point ed out in the claims.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the front axle of the wagon-gear, B the bolster, and O the hounds, between the forward ends of which the wagontongue D is secured, in the usual manner, by the bolt-rod E, so that the tongue is permitted to turn on the bolt-rod E, thereby enabling the teamster or others to raise and lower the forward end of the tongue to any position desired, and also to permit the point of the tongue to rise and fall when the team is drawing the wagon.
F designates a spring, which is made of a single rod or bar, F, of spring iron or steel. This spring F is provided at its middle with a bend or depression, G, and its arms H H extend rearwardly and downwardly from this bend G, and each arm H is provided at some distance from the bend G with several coils I, in which a round or cross brace, J, is seated, and held from lateral displacement by short pins K, inserted in said cross-brace. From the outer ends of the coils I I the metal rod or bar F extends in the form of downwardlyprojecting upwardly-turned hooksL L. The projecting ends of the cross-brace J rests on the hounds immediately in front of the bolster B, and the hooks L L engage and partially encircle it from the under side. A chain, N, is secured to the depressed portion G of the spring F, and this chain N is provided at its forward or lower end with a hook, P, which hook engages an eyebolt, Q, secured in the upper face of the tongue, and supports the tongue in the proper horizontal elevation to permit the team to be hitched to the wagon, and takes the weight of the tongue off of the horses necks and prevents the shocks from the wagon from being visited upon the horses necks when the wagon is being hauled along.
R is a pole or upright, having a pike, S, in its lower end, which is designed to fit into a hole, T, in the front bolster when the wagon is in the wagon-shed. This pole R is provided at its upper end with an endless chain or belt, U, which is secured in place by a head ed bolt, W, and when the wagon-tongue is turned up this chain or belt is thrown over the end of the tongue and holds it in a vertical or upright position out of the way.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The combination, with the bolster adapted to vertically support a removable pole carrying an endless belt at its outer end, ofa pivoted tongue adapted to be engaged by the said belt, and supported inia raised position by the said pole, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the wagon-gear, wagon'tongue, and spring F, of the pole R, with pike S, and endless belt U, substantially as specified.
