WAGON-TONGUE SUPPORT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,937, dated October 19,1886.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, ELIJAH McCo a citizen of the United States, residin g at Pittsburg, in the county of Crawford and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vagon-Tongue Supports, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in wagon-tongue supports; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of de vices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of a wagon-tongue supporter embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same attached to the tongue of a vehicle. Fig. 3 is a top plan view.

The supporter is formed from a single piece of spring metallic rod, which is first bent in the center to form the forward supportingarm, A. The ends of the spring-rod are then coiled to form the springs B, from which extend the rearwardly-projecting arms 0.

D represents a keeper, which is also made of a single rod of metal, and bent substantially in the form of the letter U, thereby forming a yoke or horizontal portion, F, and the vertical arms G. The upper ends of the said arms are bent to form hooks H. These arms G are pro vided with screw-th reads to receive taps I, and the said taps are each provided with a hook, K. As the said taps fit on the threaded arms G, it follows that by rotating the taps the hooks K may be raised or lowered.

The operation of my invention is as follows: The arm A of the supporter rests under the tongue in advance of the pivotal rod d, and

From the foregoing description it will be readily understood that the weight of the tongue is borne by the support, thus preventing the tongue from bearing down heavily upon the necks of the draftanimals. If it is desired to lower the outer end of the ton ue, the hooks H will be caused to engage with the pivotal rod or bolt (1, and if it be desired to raise the outer end of the tongue the hooks K will be caused to engage with the said pivotal rod or bolt.

Having thus described my invention, I claim The combination of the hounds having the transverse rod 0, the tongue, the rod or bolt (1, pivoting the tongue to the hounds, the support having the forward-extending arm A, the springs 13, and the rearwardextending arms 0, the said support having its front end bearing under the tongue and its arm 0 bearing under the rod 6, and the keeper D, having the yoke F attached to the springs, and the vertical arms G, having the hooks engaging with the rod or bolt (Z, on which the tongue is pivoted, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
