Description

J. METGALFE.
BUGGY TOP.-
Patented Apr. 27, 1886.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN METICALFE, OF BRANTFORD, ONTARIO, CANADA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE HALF TO CHARLES CHAMPION, OF SAME PLACE.
BUGGY-TOP.
$PECIFICATION forming pait of Letters Patent No. 340,809, dated April 27,188
Application filed February G, 1886. Serial No. 191,028. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JOHN M ETCALFE, a subjeet of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at the city of Branti'ord, in the county of Brant,
in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented an Improved Device for Adjusting Buggy-Tops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in Y IO devices for adjusting buggy-tops;'andit consists in the peculiar combinations, and the novel construction and arrangement of parts, as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a I 5 buggy top provided with my improved device raised. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the top folded. Fig. 3 is a detail of my device for adjusting the top.
A represents the front joint, and B the back joint. The eye a of the front jointhas a square hole to fit over the square end of the hollow sleeve or spindle O. The inside end of this sleeve 0 has a handle, I), fixed to it. The eye I) of the back joint, 13, has a square hole which fits over a square formed on the spindle E, which passes through the sleeve 0, and has a handle, F, fixed to its inside end, as shown. Both the handles D and F are accessible to the occupant of the buggy, who, by pressing upon either one or other of these handles, may adjust the front of the top or lower it entirely back, as circumstances require; and he can perform this service without moving off his seat.
I have shown in the drawings, by dotted 5 lines, the position of the top when the front is folded back. It will, of course, be understood that the front joint might be connected to the spindle E, and the back joint,B, to the sleeve 0, the effect in either case being the same. 0
"What I claim as my invention is-- The frontjoint,A, provided with eye a,having square hole, and the hollow sleeve G,having square end to engage the holein said eye, combined with the back joint, 13, having eye I), 5 provided with square hole, the spindle E,hav ing square end engaging the hole in said eye I), the said spindle passing through the hollow sleeve, and the handles D F,fixed to the ends of the sleeve C and spindle E, respectively, substantially as herein shown and described.
Brantford, January 25, 1886.
JOHN METOALFE.
In presence of- CHARLES CHAMPION, JOSEPH MURPHY.
