'IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIYATORS.

Specifica-tion forming part of Letters Patent N0. 3,406, dated January 15, 1844.

To all whom n may concern: Be it known that I, Renner NELSON, of

West Point, inthe county ofhTippecauoe and Iner atvpleasure, and to set and retain the plow in any position within halt' a circle by a lever which runs from said bars audtallsiulo'ntehes I'n a circular iron comb attached to the han dies of said plows.

. To enable others skilled in the art to make andv use my invention, I will proceed to de- ,scribe its construction and operation.

M y plow is formed of the same material and lin any of the known forms ot'- double or three shovel plows, consisting of center and outside beams, attached near the clevis by an iron fret back by another'iron bar'xof suitable dimensions, which is fastened through the center beam, but let loosely into the outside beams, so thatthey can bevtlrawn up or extend on it, as'reqn'ired.

For the purpose ot' contract-ing or expanding'the set ofthe plow, three inches from the back partof each outside beam I insert perpendicularlyan iron rod, A A, ten inches long and three-fourths of an vinch thick, with small journalsattop and bottom ot'each bar, to which are attached `four other bars, B B 'B B, of the same length and thickness, two above and two below, (let on with eyes and screwed dowrn) each bar running inward at right angles to the center beam. Thron gh the center beamof said plow and in line with the bars last mentioned I insert a third revolving bar, c, one inch thick and seven inches long, secured at top andbot# tom of said beam with screws or washers, so as to prevent play perpendicularly, and on journals on the top and bottom of said center bar I place 'and screw down a hat bar, D, one and a quarter inch withl and one-quarterot an inch thick, (so placed as to leave .an equal distance on each side ofthe center bar aforesaid above and below-3) and tothe ends of this. flat bar, I unite with loose screws the four bars running Inward, as before described, from the outside .beam,'(the said llatbars containing two or more holes, as may be needed, so as to make the point ot connection nearer or more remote) thu`s-g1 ving a narrow or wide set to .the plow.

What I claim as myiuvention, and desire to s cure by Letters Patent, is'-' The manner in whiehl have combined and arranged the `bars'B B B B and lever Eso as to ei'eetthe contraction and expansion of the cultivator, and in combination with the above the iron comb F.
