WITJV'ESSEAS Ihvrrn STATES Artnr tricee LEWIS I. CROSVELL AND CHARLES A. FUNK, OF MOLEAN,` ILLINOIS.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,488, dated April 20, 1886. l Application filed February 18, 1886. Serial No. 192,415. (No model.)
To all wwm it may concern:
Be it known that we, Lewis P. CRoswnLL and CHARLES A. FUNK, citizens of the United States of America, residing at McLean, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in iVrenches; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the sa-me, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to wrenches; and it consists in the improvements hereinafter de scribed and set forth. Y
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a side elevation of a wrench embodying our invention. Fig. Zis a vertical sectional view of the said wrench.
A refers to the body of the wrench, which is provided on its upper end with a stationary jaw, B, and is formed at its lower portion to constitute a handle, C. The vertical front and rear sides of the body A are provided with a series of teeth, a.
D refers to a casting, which is provided with two-horizontal portions, b c, which -are connected together at the front by means of a wall, d, which extends partly around the sides of the body A. The sides of the portions b care connected together' at the rear by means of portions c f.
The arrangement ofthe parts b c and portions c f is such that a vertical guideway is formed through the same, in which is located a part of the body A. The inner faces of the portions e f are provided with a series of teeth designed to engage the teeth a on the rear face of the body A. The faces g h of the casting D, adjacent to the front face of the body A, are plain, as shown in Fig. 2.
\Vithin the front portion of the casting E is formed a recess, in which is pivotally secured by means ofa pivot, t, a cam`head, E, the bear'- ing-face of which is provided with a series of teeth to engage the teeth a on the front side of the body A.
F refers to a handle or shank,wl1ich depends free portion of which extends down through an opening in the front of the casting D, and bears against the cam-head, so as to normally hold the same in engagement with the teeth on the front of the body A.
It will be noted that by moving the handle F so as to disengage the canrhead from the teeth on the front ofthe body A, and by moving the casting D so that the teeth on the front of the body approach the plain faces of the l portions g h, the teeth of the portions e f will be disengaged from the rear teethv c, thereby permitting the movable jaw or casting D to be adjusted vertically on the body A to or from the rigid jaw B. After the desired adjustment is secured the handle F is released, and the spring 7c automatically throws the cam-head again into engagement with the front teeth c, thus throwing the front portion of the casting D and its plain faces away from the body A, and consequently bringing the teeth of the portions e f again into engagement with the rear teeth a. The movable jaw or casting D is thus rigidlyjammed in position.
It will be observed that the handle F is so arranged and disposed that it can be readily grasped with the body A and accidental movement or play of the cam-head prevented.
It will be obvious that the wrench herein described is both effective and durable in operation and of simple construction. The parts being few, derangement or damage is prevented.
A removable projection or lug, m, is located on the rear side of the body A, in order to limitthe downward movement ofthe castingD.
The stationary jaw B has a projecting portion, B', which is curved on its under side or opposite the incline, as shown at G', so as to adapt the wrench to be applied as a pipewrench, and in order to do this the removable projection or lug m is removed, and the casting D reversed upon the handle, so as to place the removable jaw under the serrated or stationary jaw, and whenr thus placed in position the parts will be organized so as to constitute a pipe-wrenoh.
Y e claim- The combination, in a wrench, of the body A, having the rigid jaw B, and provided with teeth on its front and rear sides, of a movable jaw or casting, D, mounted on said body be-
