Description

(ModeL) H. H. PERKINS.
- SEAL LOCK.
No. 340,351. Patented Apr.'20, 1886.
NlTED ATENT 'rrtee.
HENRY HOBART PERKINS, OF LAS VEGAS, TERRITORY OF NEW MEXICO.
SEAL-LOCK. H
HPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 340,351, dated April 20, 1883.
Application filed May 6. 1885.
strong, effective, and serviceable lock is provided, and one that may be manufactured and U supplied at a slight cost.
111 the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation showing my improved seal-lock applied. Fig. 2 is a View of the lock with the rear plate removed and showing the position occupied by the parts when locked. Fig. 3 is a similar View to Fig. 2, but showing the device unlocked; and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the seal employed. 1
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, A represents the hasp, which is pivoted to the car-door. The free end of the said hasp is hooked, as shown at a, and is provided with the nib or projection I). e
D represents a metal casing, which is composed of two parts or sections, the part d only being shown in the drawings, which are designed to be secured together by screws or equivalent fastening. as shown.
E represents a tumbler, which is pivoted between the sides composing the casing D, and at the upper end thereof adjacent to an aperture or opening, 6, in the upper end of the casing, which aperture is provided for the admission of the hooked end ofthehasp A,.which hooked end is adapted to engage the lower end of the pivoted tumbler. It will be seen that as the tumbler is eccentrically pivotedthat is, at its upper endthat it will at all times maintain a vertical position. i
F represents a plate, which is pivoted near the lower end of the casing. The said plate F is provided with an upwardly-extending hooked finger, H, which is adapted to bear Serial No. 164,577. (Model) against the outer side of an extension, H; formed upon the tumbler E. The plate F is also provided with an extension,G,projecting upwardly, and adapted to bear against the inner side of the extension H of the tumbler E. It will thus be seen that a space, f, is formed by said hooked finger H and extension G, in which space the lower end of the extension H works.
At the lower end of the plate F is provided a downwardly-extending curved arm,J, which is adapted to work in an aperture or opening formed at the lower end of the casing, the movement of the said curved arm being limited by the side of the casing, as at 9, so that its free end can just clear the lowerend ofthe easing sut'ficiently to admit a seal, 0, or allow said seal to be placed upon the curved arm.
The operation is as follows: The hasp enters the aperture in the upper end of the casing and bears against the inner side of thepivoted tumbler'E, pushing it to one side. When the hooked end of said hasp has reached a point on a line with the lower end of the tumbler, the pivoted plate F forces said tumbler into engagement with the hooked end of the hasp, the hooked finger H of the plate ll bearing against the outer side of the extension H.
It will be understood that previous to inserting the hooked end of the hasp into the casing that the seal is placed upon the curved arm J. The extension H of the tumbler E,
when the device is locked, bears against the inner side of the hooked finger H, and thus holds the free end of the curved arm within the casing, the seal fitting in recesses formed in the lower end of the casing.
To unlock the device, the seal must be first cut or broken, when the curved arm may be pushed upwardly by hand, which action causes the extension G to bear against the inner side oted plate for locking the tumbler, and an arm I In testimony that I claim the foregoing as on the lower end of said plate to receivea seal, my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in substantially asset forth. presence of two Witnesses.
2. In a lock. the combination, with a casing, 5 of a. pivoted tumbler having an extension, a HENRY HOBART PERKINS.
llasp adapted to be engaged by said tumbler, a pivoted plate having a hook ed finger to hear Witnesses: against the outer side ofthetumbler-extension, GEO. E. JOHNSON, and an arm on the lower end of said plate to ARTHUR E. SWEET.
1o reeeive the seal, substantially as set forth.
