THOMAS A. MAOAULAY, OF NEW YORK, Y.
MECHANICAL MOVEMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters-Patent No. 340,227, dated April 20, 1886.
Application filed Fchnmry Q, 1886. Serial No. 190,029. (Nommlel.)
To all 107mm it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, THOMAS A. MAOAULAY,
A is the frame. B is a hedplate. C is the main rotary drivingshaft, having a crank, D.
E is a drivingwheel. F F2 is a pitmairlever. G is a bell-crank lever suspended on centers g g. H is a pitman-lever. I is a shalt having a crank, J, jonrnaled in the bracket B2. K is a horizontal lever, pivoted to the bed B by stud b. L isa stud pivoting the pitmanlever F F2 to the short arm of the bell-crank G. M is a stud pivoting the Pitman-lever H to the extended arm G ot the bell-crankv lever. .N is a cap hinged to thepitmau-lever F by pin P, which connects the pitnianlever F F2 to the crank D. O is a screw securing the cap N to the pitman-lever. Q is a pin fixed to the pitman-lever F F2, and engaging in a slot,a, in the pitman-lever H. S isa drag-link connecting the lower end of the pit` inan-lever H with the crank T. It is a ball on the end of the long arm of the boll-orank lever G, engaging in the fork on the end of the horizontal lever K..
Motion being imparted to the main shaft C, a vertical and vibratory motion is caused in the pitman-lever F F2,and a vibratory motion is imparted to the bell-crank lever G, anda vertical and vibratory motion is imparted to the pitman-lever Hby reason ofits connection to the bell-crank G at M, and by reason of its connection with the pitmau-lever F F2 by pin Q in the slot a. This vertical and lateral motion of the pitman-lever .H imparts a rotary motion to the crank J through the'drag-link S.
It will be observed that the point M travels a greater distance than the point L, by reason of its greater distance from the center of the It therefore lifts the pitman-lever understood that a common stud may be used H a corresponding distance, and the pitmanlever H being longer from the center of M to the center of S2 than the pitman-lever F F2 is from the center of its connection with the crank D to the center of its connection to the bell-crank G, it results that the vibratory movement of the pitman-lever H at its lower end is greater than if the distance from D to L and from M to S2 were equal. Therefore the vertical and vibratory movements of the pitman-lever Hare increased, and a crank of greater throw or longer leverage can be used on the shaft l than if its rotary movement were obtiined by a direct connect-ion of the pitmanlever F F2 with the crank J. By this means a greater power can be exerted by the crank I and an easier movement obtained, as well as smoothness and ease in action.
It will be readily seen that instead of giving the lever H its vibratory movement from the pitman-lever F F2 it may be extended, as shown in Fig. 3, forked, and connected to the crank D, the crank D being extended sufficiently.
It will be readily seen that insteadof the piu Q and slot a an ordinary connecting-link may be substituted. lt will also be readily to connect the pitman-lever -F F2 and the pitman-lever H H2 to the arm G. A
rlhe above-described mechanical movement is useful in sewingmachines and for other purposes. 85
Having described my invention, I claiml. A mechanical movement consisting of a main rotary shaft having a crank,as D, a primary pitman-lever, as F F2, operatively conuected with a primary vibrating lever, as G G2, a horizontal lever, as K, a secondary pitmanlevel', as H, pivoted to an arm of said primary lever, and connected by suitable devices with said primary pitmanlever, to cause a lateral motion therein, and a shaft, as I, suitably connected With said pitman-lever H, to impart a rotary motion to said shaft I, as and for the purpose specified. A2. A mechanical movement consisting of a main rotary shaft having a crank, as D, a piticc man, as F, operatively connected with a primary vibrating lever, as G G2, a horizontal lever, as K, a pitman-lever, as Hv H2, suitably connected, to cause a lat-eral movement there,-
in, and a shaft, as I, suitably connected with said pitman-lever, to impart a rotary motion to said lshaft I, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A mechanical movement consisting` of a main rotary shaft having a crank, as D, a pitman, as F, operative] y connected with an arm, as G, a pitman-lever pivoted to said arm G, and connected by suitable devices to impart to it a vibratory movement, and a shaft, as I, suitably connected with said pitmanlever, to cause a rotation in said shaft, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. A mechanical movement consisting o1' a main rotary shaft having a crank, as D,apr mary pitmau-lever, as F F", operatively conl nected with an arm, as G,a secondary Pitmanlever, as H, pivoted to said arm G, and suitably connected with said primary pitman-1e- Ver F F2, to impart to it a lateral motion, and a shaft, as I, suitably connected with said see ondary pitman-lever, to cause said shaft I to rotate, as and for the purpose specied.
TI-IOS. A. MACAULAY.
