JAMES W. STAPLES, OF BIDDEFORD, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN TREADLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,284, dated July 21, 1674; application filed June 6, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES W. STAPLES, of Biddeford, in the, county of York and State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved Treadle-Motion, of which the following is a specification The invention relates to the mode of operatin g the crank-wheel of a sewing-machine by top-pivoted and swinging treadles, and consists in the improvement of this particular class of devices, as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.

A represents the treadle-rod, which is pivoted to the sewing-machine table at B, and hangs down to a point a little above the frame connecting-rod G, where it is provided-with a foot-piece, D. E and F represent the arms of the bell-crank, which is pivoted at its angle on the rod 0, and connected by one arm to the rod A, and by the other to a rod, J, which is connected to the crank G. In this case the driving-pulley H turns in a plane at right angles to that in which the rod A swings, and a link, K, is employed for connecting the bellcrank with the rod J, to allow the latter to vibrate in two directions; but when the wheel works parallel with rod A this will not be needed. The arm E is connected to rod A by a pin, L, in a slot, M, in the rod, but it may be connected by a link. The foot-piece may be covered with rubber, or other suitable substance, to prevent the foot from slipping, and in practice it will be connected to the rod so that it may be adjusted up and down to adapt it to the requirements of dili'erent persons. The contrivauce is applicable to any foot-power machine.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and'desire to secure by Letters Patnl' The combination, with crank-wheel pitman J and slotted swinging treadle AD, of elbowlever E F, having pin L, and the link K, arranged as and for the purpose specified.
