WILLIAM L. GROUT AND EDWARD L. BOVVERS, OF ORANGE, MASSA- OHUSETTS.
MECHANICAL MOVEMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,525, dated November 22, 1887.
Application filed August l5, 1887. Serial No. 247,002. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, \VILLIAM L. GROUT and EDWARD L. BOWERS, both of Orange, county of Franklin, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Mechanical ll/Iovementsofwhich the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object the production of novel mechanism by which a connecting-rod driven by a crank or eccentric rotates three or more parallel shafts.
Our invention is especially applicable in sewing-machines, but may he used in any class ofmaehine wherein it is desired to rotate three or more parallel shafts by one connectingrod.
Figure 1 shows our invention embodied in connection with a sewing-machine, and Fig. 2 a section of Fig. 1 on the line as, looking to the left.
The bedplate A and overhanging arm A are and maybe as in any usual sewing-machine. The upright portion of the arm is pro vided with a crank-shaft, B, on which is secured a driving-pulley, D. The crank of the shaft B has mounted upon it and supports a connecting-rod, E, having a right-angled extension, E, the said connecting'rod andits extension having a series of half-boxes, a b 0, (see Fig. 2,) with which co-operate other halfboxes, 11 b 0 the said boxes embracing crankpins a b c on the disks attached to the shafts a b 0 all parallel and driving, it may be, respectively, the needle-bar, the lower threadearrier, and the feeding devices. The rotation of the shaft B actuates the connecting-rod, and it rotates all the said shafts at the same speed and in the same direction.
We are aware that heretofore two parallel shafts have been driven by a third shaft by using one or more connecting-rods, as in the patentto Rowell, No, 64,450, dated May 7, 1867, and such a device is not broadly claimed by us; but, prior to our invention, we are not aware that three parallel shafts have been driven by a fourth shaft, by one connectingrod, as herein shown.
We claim- The cranked driving-shaft and the parallel shafts OL2 12 0 combined with a connecting-rod joined to and rotating the said shafts in the same direction in unison, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
\VM. L. GROUT. EDWVARD L. BOWERS.
Witnesses:
H. S. DAWLEY, EDWARD WHITNEY.
