COMBINED WATCH-CHARM AND ClGAR-CUTTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,212, dated April 20, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, JOHN E. HEATH and WILLIAM FREDRIcKs, of the city, county, and

State of New York, have invented certain new represents a side elevation of our combined watchcharm and cigar-cutter, showingthe same ready. for cutting the tip of a cigar. Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical central sections on line c c, Fig. 1, showing the cutter respect-v ively in position before-and after cutting, and

Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are horizontal sections respectively on lines .r x, y y, and z z, Fig. 2.

In the drawings, A represents a cylindrical guide-shell,`which is made of suitable sheet metal, and provided at oneside with a circular opening, a, of sufficient size for admitting the insertion of the tip of the cigar. The upper end of the shell A is contracted, so as to form an inwardlyprojecting retaining-fiange, c. The bottom ofthe guide-shell A is closed by means of a hinged cap, A', which may be provided with a suitable stone that is engraved so as to form a seal. By opening the cap, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, the tips collected in the guide-shell A 'are dropped from the same.

In the upper part of the shell A is guided a tubular shank, B, to the lower. end of which is rigidly attached a cutter, B', while the upper closed end is provided with a pivoted bail,

Between the tubular shank B and a fixed bracket-post, D, at the interior of the guide-shell A,is interposed a spiral spring, d, which serves to lift the shank B out of the shell A, after the same has beenY pushed into the shell, as shown in Fig. 3.

The tubular shank B is guided by a longitudinal tongue or spline, e, in a recess, e', of the flange c', said tongue being recessed at the upper end, so as to be engaged by the flange a on turning the shank B axially in the shell A. The shank B is thereby locked to the guide-shell A against the tension of the spring d. The lower part of the shank B covers thereby the opening a, while the recessed side before described, is provided below the opening a With a spring-actuated clasp, f, which engages the projecting fiange f at the lower edge of the tubular shank B, said flange being '-in line with the lower edge of the cuttingknife B.

When the cutter B is moved in downward direction, the flange f presses the beveled catch f in inward direction until it is engaged by the same. The shank B may then be turned so that its lower part closes the opening a, the catehf retaining it during its turning motion by its connection with the ilange, in addition to the devices hereinbefore mentioned for retaining said shank. IVhen it is desired to release the shank B, a projecting stud,f2, attached to the spring of the claspf, is depressed, and thereby the clasp released so that when the shank B is turned to permit the spline e to pass through the'recess e of the flange c the spiral spring d can return the shank B and cutter B into Araised position until the cutter abuts against the flange a of the shell A, as shown in Fig. 2. The springcatch f has the advantage that the shank B is locked automatically by the clasp f when pushed down into the guideshell A for cutting oli' the tip of a cigar, and is not required to beheld in position until the tongue e is the shell A, in addition to the devices hereinplaced below the iiange a by turning the shank B, which is the case when no springclasp is used. The spring-catch f also prevents the rattling of the parts. l

When carrying the device as a watch-charm, the shank B is pushed into the guide-shell, locked thereto, and then turned so as to close the opening a. A cutting-knife of segmental, V, or other shape, may be used. A neat and compactcigar-cutting device is thus obtained,

which can be conveniently carried on the watch-chain, so as to be always within reach for use.

The spring-catch f and flangef, with which it engages, may, however, be entirely dispensed with, if desired, without destroying the suecessful operation of our device; but when used in conjunction with the spline e and ange a', having slot e', they form an auxiliary or sup plemental safety-catch.

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, in a cigar-tip cutter, of a tubular guide-shell having a side opening, and provided at its top with an inward iange having a recess, a spring-actuated tubular shank which reciproca-tes within said shell, provided with a cutter, and a spline which slides in said recess during the reciprocation of the shank, substantially as described.

2. In a cigar-tip cutter, a guide-shell having a side opening and an inward flange at its upper end, said liange being provided with a recess, in combination with a sliding and axially-turning tubular shank Within said shell, provided with a cutter, and with a spline which slides in said recess during the reciprocation of the shank and engages said flange when the shank is pushed into and turned Y axially within the shell, substantially as described.

3. The combination, in a cigar-tip cutter, of a tubular guide-shell having a side opening,

and provided at its top with an inward Iiange having a recess, a springactuated tubular shank which reciprocates within said shell, provided with a cutter, with a spline which slides in said recess, and with an arc-shaped flangeat its lower end, and a spring-catch attached to'said shell and engaging said arcshaped flange, whereby the shank is permitted to turn axially within the shell while being held by the catch, substantially as described.

4. In a cigar-tip cutter, a guide-shell having a side opening, and provided at its tcp with an inward flange having a recess, in combination with a sliding and axially-turning tubular shank within said shell, provided with a cutter, and with a spline which slides in said recess during the reciprocation of the shank, and engages said flange when the shank is pushed into and turned axially within the shell, an arc-shaped ange attached to the lower end of said shank, and a spring-catch attached to said shell and engaging said arcshaped ange, whereby the shank is permitted to turn axially Within the shell while being held by the catch, substantially as described.
