Nrrnn STATES ALBERT P. MOSES AND HARRY H. HAWLEY, OF MALONE, NEW YORK.
FLOOR-CLAMP.
SPECIFIOATIGN forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,145, dated April 20, 1886.
Application filed February 18, 1885. Serial No; 192,428. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ALBERT P. MosEs and HARRY H. HAWLEY, citizens ofthe United States, residing at Malone, in the county of Franklin and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Flooring-Olamps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Ourinvention relates to an improvement in flooring-clamps; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of parts that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of our invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same in another position. Fig. 3 is a top plan view.
A represents the frame or body of the clamp, which is provided at one end with the extended arm B, through the outer end of which passes a vertical spike, C. The opposite end of the frame A is provided with a pair of ratchet-bars, D, on its upper side, and between the said ratchet-bars is formed a guideway, E, in which operates a reciprocating head, F. This head is provided at its outer end with a wear-plate, G, and on its upper side ispiv'oted a doubleended pawl, H, which engages with the ratchet-teeth by its own gravity.
I represents a pair of brackets, which are secured on the upper side of the frame A, at the inner end of the guideway E, and to the said brackets is secured a transverse shaft, K, on which is journaled an eccentric-cam, L, having on one side a spur-pinion, M, and a hand-lever, N. This hand-lever is provided with a pivoted pawl, O, the engaging end of which is provided with a V-shaped notch, P, by means of which two engaging points are formed, by means of which the said pawl may engage with the teeth of the pinion when the lever is either in the position shown in Fig. 1 or in Fig. 3.
The operation of our invention is as follows: The frame is secured on the joist a by driving the spike G therein, and the driving end of the head presses against the outer edge of the flooring-plank b. The hand-1ever is then moved to cause its pawl to engage with the teeth of the pinion, and thereby partly rotate the oam, whioh bears against the inner end of the movable head and forces it out wardly, thereby driving the flooring-plank firmly to its proper position. As the head moves outwardly its pawl H engages with the ratchet-bars D and prevents retrograde move ment when the hand-lever is released. This operation is proceeded with until the last plank of the floor but one has been secured and nailed to the joist, and then the flooringclamp is reversed, so as to bear against the studding at the side of the room, and the spike O is secured to the last plank to be fitted in the floor. The pawl O is then turned, so as to cause its opposite engaging point to come in contact with the spur-pinion, when the operation is proceeded with as before, and thus thelast plank in the floor is forced firmly in position.
Having thus described our invention, we claim- 1. The combination of the frame A, having the spike at one end, the guideway E at the opposite end, and the ratchet-bars D, with the movable head in the guideway, having the pawls H, for engaging with the ratchetbars D, to prevent retrograde movement of the head, the cam journaled to the frame A and bearing against one end of the head, and the lever for rotating the said cam, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in a flooring-c1amp,'of the frame and the movable head therein with the cam journaled to the frame and bearing against one end of the head, the wheel L, having the teeth and secured eccentrically to the cam, and the pivoted hand-lever having the pawl for engaging with the teeth of the wheel L, substantially as described.
3. The combination, in a flooring-clamp, of the movable head, the cam bearing against one end thereof, the wheel L, having the teeth.
and secured eccentrically to the cam, and the pivoted hand-lever having the pivoted pawl or dog, the latter having its engaging end provided with engaging points on opposite sides, whereby the hand-lever may be moved in either direction to rotate the cam, substantiall y as described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT P. MOSES.
