Description

'(Appucation med oer- 19, 1900.)
. TH: Nonms crans PNoraLrrno.. WASHINGTON, n. c,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WESLEY L. BEACH, OF GENEVA, OHIO.
IVIACHINE FOR PRESSING MATCHED LUIVIBER TOGETHER.
SECFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 668,573, dated February 19, 1901.
Application filed October 19, 1900. Serial No. 33,663. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WESLEY L. BEACH, a citizen of the United States, residing at the village of Geneva, in the countyof Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented a newand useful Machine forPressng Matched Lumber Together, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combination of levers and a grip operatingi'n conjunction, using the edge of the matched lumber to be pressed together as a fulcrum upon which the pressure is brought to bear, and the frame, consisting of studding or joists of a building, .forms an anchorage by which the force of the machine is applied; and the objects of the invention are to apply force expeditiously upon the pieces of lumber to be placed and holding them firmly while they are fastened. l attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing,in which the gure is a perspective View of the entire machine, showing its operation in its connection with the frame G, upon which it is supposed to be used, and the pieces H H, upon which the force of the machine is exerted, indicated by'.
broken lines.
The lever A is connected with connectingrod B by passing the upper end of the rod through a recess a in the lever and by boltD and nut d, allowing a small oscillation of the connection longitudinallyin the lever. Rod
B is also connected in a similar manner by bolt E and nut e with grip O, the oscillation of the latter connection being longitudinally in the grip O. The grip has a recess in its edge, as shown, and in the use of the machine the grip is applied upon the inner side of the studding, the jaws F F of the grip sliding along the sides of the studding until the proper position is reached, bringing the flat surface of the under side of lever A down upon the edge of the piece of lumber and pressing it by the lever to its place. The act of bearing down upon the lever instantly engages the jaws F F upon opposite sides of the studding and holds the machine firmly while the pressure of lever A is bearing upon the edge of the lumber, forcing it into place.
It is evident that the machine may be quickly applied and as quickly disconnected.
The machine is applied in a similar manner in laying ooring-lumber, the grip being applied to the under side of the joists and the operation similar in all respects to that above described.
The construct-ion and operation of the machine as described must be apparent and cannot require further description.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A device for pressing together the edges of matched lumber, consisting of a lever having in one end an aperture elongated longitudinally of said lever, a bar having in one end an aperture elongated longitudinally thereof and provided at its opposite end with jaws adapted to engage a joist or the like, a connecting-rod whose ends enter said apertures,
. and bolts secu ring the rod therein, the diameter of the rod being less than the long aXes of the apertures, whereby a limited oscillation of the rod is permitted longitudinally of the lever and bar.
