FLOOR CLAMP OR. JACK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 9, 1916.
Application filed June 21, 1915. Serial No. 35,430.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MCBREAIRTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dickey, in the county of Aroostook and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Floor Clamps or Jacks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled seams in floors caused by shrinkage or warpage of the planks.
Another object is to provide a powerful and quick acting device of this character which may be used equally well for laying floors on joists or upon the top of other flooring.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and the combination and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a jack constructed in accordance with this invention showing it applied; Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail perspective view ofone-of. the floor dogs; Fig. .4
is a longitudinal section thereof; Fig. 5 is a horizontal section taken on the line 55 of Figs; Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the base plate carrying the wedge shaped ratchet member. i
In the embodiment illustrated a base plate 1 is shown which is designed to rest on a joist or floor and which is hereshowiiwith its upper face inclined downwardly from its rear toward its front end and rising from said base midway the width thereof is a wedge-shaped ratchetmember 2 having forwardly inclined teeth 3 on its upper edge for a purpose to be described. The rear end of this member 2 is beveled downwardly and rearwardly to form a stop for limiting the forward movement of the operating lever to bedescribed. The rear end of this base 1 is bifurcated and between the furcations 3 thereof is pivotally mounted one end of a lever 4. The end of this lever which is mounted between these furcations 3 is reduced as shown at 5 to adapt it to fit between the furcations 8 and to provide on opposite sides of said reduced end shoulders 6 which are herein shown rounded and which are adapted to engage the upper face of the base 1 when the lever is swung forwardly for limiting its movement in this direction; This lever is provided intermediatelv of its ends preferably near the pivoted end thereof with a longitudinally extending slot 7 opening edgewise through the lever and provided at the front thereof in its lower end wall with a dog 8 for a purpose to be described. 1
Two dogs?) and 10 are pivotallymounted on the ratchet member 2 being here shown provided with laterally extending arms 9' and 10 which are arranged on opposite faces of said member 2 and through which and said member the connecting pintle 11 extends. These dogs 9 and 10 are provided with biting ends or points 12 which are designed to be driven into the floor or joist on which the device is to be mounted for se curely holding the base plate in operative engagement therewith and to prevent movement of said base plate during the operation of the clamp or jack as will be hereinafter more fullv described.
A slide in the form of a head 14 is carried by the lever 4 and arranged transversely of the clamp and is designed to engage the boards to be operated on' as is shown clearly in Fig. 1. This head 14: is provided midway its ends with a pair of laterally and inwardly extending spaced apertured lugs or ears 15 between which is pivotally mounted a detent or dog 16 having its free end tapered and rounded and which extends inwardly or rearwardly and is designed to engage the teeth 3 of the ratchet member 2 to hold the head 14 in adjusted floor engaging position while the lever which actuates the head is being moved to. take a freshgrip. Two arms 17 are connected with, the opposite ends of the head 14 and are preferably curved longitudinally to position their free ends in a plane above, their connected ends, said free ends/converging toward each other and provided on their inner faces with recesses 18 which are adapted to receive the head in form with the arm 20 extending rearwardly from the vertex thereof. This head is secured in position between the arms 17 by bolts or other suitable fastening elements and the front end thereof abuts against the shoulders 18 formed by the inner ends of the recesses 18 so that pressure exerted on the arm 20 will be, communicated to the arms 17 and through them to the head 1%.
'The arm 20 is provided on its lower edge with ratchet teeth 21 and is designed to pass through the slot 7 in the lever 1, said teeth 21 being adapted to engage the dog 8 of said lever whereby the lever and arm are rigidly connected when the lever is moved forwardly to exert force and cause the slide 13 to move against the floor to be operated on and when more force is designed to be exerted the lever is moved rearwardly to take a fresh grip on another tooth of the arm 20, the dog or detent 16 then engaging the teeth 3 of the ratchet member 2 and holding the head locked in operative engagement with the floor while sa'id lever is being so moved.
As shown the head 14 is provided in 1ts opposite ends on its inner face with notches 14 to receive the ends of the arm 17, said notches being inclined inwardly and clownwardly from their outer ends to provide for the connection of said arms 17 in position to cause their free ends to converge and yet adapt them to transmit pressure or force from them directly to said head.
In the use of this'jack or clamp the spurs 12 of the dogs 9 and 10 are driven into the plank or other stationary object on which the clamp is to be mounted and the head 14 is placed against the board B to be set up. The parts are so arranged and designed that when this occurs the pawl or detent 16 will engage the teeth 3 on the rack 2 and the lever 1 may be in vertical position or slightly inclined forward. This lever is then moved rearwardly to cause the dog 8 thereof to engage one of the teeth 21 and will thus produce great pressure on the board B through the head 14: and at the same time the'peculiar curvature of the arms 17 serves to hold said head down against the flooring and absolutely prevents any sidewise motion or tipping of the head. As the lever is pushed down or forward .the pawl 16 travels along the rack 2 and when the curved shoulders 6 of the lever engage the base 1 no further movement can occur and it is then necessary to take a fresh'grip on arm 20 which is accomplished by moving the lever at rearwardly, the dog 8 thereof'sliding over the teeth 21 of said arm 20 during this operation and the pawl 16 locking the head'against rearward movement. The lever is then again moved forwardly to exert further pressure through the head let on the board B.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a floor jack, the combination of a base having a ratchet member rising therefrom, a lever fulcrumed in said base at the rear of said ratchet member, a dog carried by said lever, a slide having a head at one end and a ratchet arm at the other positioned to engage said dog, a floor engaging dog carried by saidbase, and a pawl carried by said head with its rear end extending rearwardly to engage the ratchet member of the base. i a
