J. H. CALDWELL.
GLAMP FOR OVERSHOES. No. 389,740. Patented Apr. 13, 1886.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE@ JOHN HARVEY CALDVELIJ, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CLAMP FOR OVERSHOES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,740, dated April 13, 1886.
(No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HARVEY CALD- WELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county ofPhiladelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clamps for Overshoes, of which the following is aspecification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in clamps for overshoes, and it consists in a spring-wire clamp secured on the inner side ot' the rear portion of an overshoe, near the upper edge thereof; and the object of my invention is to provide a device adapted to prevent the overshoe from slipping or pulling off when walking in mnd and slush, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an overshoe provided with my improved olamp. Fig. 2 is a detailed perspective view of the clamp.
A represents the clamp, which is preferably bent from a piece of spring-wire, substantially in the shape of the letter U. The arms B of the clamp normally spring toward each other at their outer ends, and the said outer ends are bent to form rings or eyes C. This clamp is attached to the inner side ofthe rear end of the overshoe, above the counter thereof, as shown in Fig. I, the clamp being eitherstitehed to the overshoe, as here shown, or secured between the lining and the outside of the shoe, or secu red thereto in any other preferred manner. When the overshoe is drawn ou, the arms of the clamp bear against opposite sides of the rear portion of the shoe, above the counter, fitting in the hollows of the shank of the wearer, thus preventing the overshoe from slipping at the heel and from pulling off when walking through mud or slush.
Having thus described my invention, I claiml. rIhe clamp A for overshoes, having the spring-arms B, and the rings or eyes C at the free ends of the said arms, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with an overshoe, ot' the clamp A, secured at its rear end above the counter and having the spring-arms B, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN HARVEY CALDVELL. XVitnesses:
J. C. MLLER, E. SHAEEER.
