(Cl. 2129) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A clerical garment with a military-style collar, a detachable white collar to be worn with it, fastening means for closing the collar of the garment and separate fasten ing means for independently fastening the detachable white collar on the military collar of the garment.

This invention relates to clerical garments or wearing apparel in general and to the fastening arrangements for the military style collar of such garment and the white collar which is worn with it.

Background of the invention The field of art to which the invention pertains is clerical garments. Shirts worn by clergymen have militarytyle collars, and exchangeable white linen collars are worn on the collars of these shirts. There are conventional, known means for closing the collars around the neck of the wearer, such as i.e. buttons, and there are further means for attaching the white collar to the shirt collar. This invention is directed to new and improved fastening means for both the shirt collar and the white collar, particularly with respect to easier and more convenient handling, and consists in the novel parts, construction arrangements, combinations and improvements herein shown and described.

The prior art consists mainly in having buttons and button holes on the collar parts, and also loose buttons for being inserted in button holes in the shirt collar and in the white collar for attaching the latter to the former. A problem exists in buttoning and closing the shirt collar and attaching the exchangeable white collar by using loose collar buttons. By this invention, these problems are overcome.

Summary The invention pertains to the fastening means for the shirt collar and to the separate fastening means for the exchangeable white collar. It also pertains to the arrangement of these fastening means on both the shirt and on the white collar for improved attaching, handling and easier and more conveniently manipulation of the same.

Objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in part hereafter and in part will be obvious herefrom or may be learned by practicing the invention, the same being realized and attained by means of the instrumentalities and combinations pointed out in the appended claims.

It is an object of this invention to provide means for both closing the collar of a clerical shirt and for fastening an additional garment piece, e.g. a white collar, on the collar of the shirt.

Furthermore it is an object of the invention to have the fastening means arranged on the collar in such fashion that they do not interfere with one another.

Another object of the invention is to provide new means for holding one part of the additional garment piece in place while the other part is being fastened to it.

Yet another object of the invention is to provide new fastening means and arrangements of these means on the clerical garments for easy and convenient handling.

Various further and mores specific purposes, features and advantages will clearly appear from the detailed description given below taken in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms part of this specification and illustrates merely by way of example one embodiment of the device of the invention. In the following description and in the claims, parts will be identified by specific names for convenience, but such names are intended to be as generic in their application to similar parts as the art will permit. Like reference characters denote like parts in the several figures of the drawing.

Description of the preferred embodiment Referring now in more detail to the drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment by which the invention may be realized, there is shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 a clerical shirt 11 with a military-style collar 12. On the outside of the inner portion or wing 13 is the male part 14 of a snap fastener. Part 14 is positioned remote from the extremity or end 15 of wing 13 so that it is not in the center of the fly front 16 of shirt 11. On the inside of the outer portion or wing 17 is the female part 18 of the snap fastener located in such manner that it is positioned away from the center of fly front 16 toward the extremity or end of wing or portion 17, in order to secure the correct overlapping of the two wings and the proper closing of collar 12. The male part 19 of another snap fastener, located between male part 14 and extremity 15, is fastened on the inner side of inner wing 13. Male part 19 is positioned substantially in the center line of the fly front of shirt 11. On the outside of collar 12 in the center of the rear part of said collar is a patch 20 of a self-adhering fabric, for example the well-known Velcro material, or the outwardly directed male part 21 of a snap fastener (see FIG. 2).

FIG. 3 shows a white collar 22 which fits over collar 12. On the inner side of the center of the front part 23 of collar 22 is the female part 24 of a snap fastener. The two rear end portions 25 and 26 can be fastened together with a snap fastener, the female part 27 being attached to the inside of left rear end portion 25 while the male part 28 is attached to the outside of right rear end portion 26. On the inside of right rear end portion 26 is the counterpart patch 29 of the self-adhering fabric which matches part 20 on the outside of collar 12. Instead of patch 29, a female part 30 of snap fastener may be placed on the inside of right rear end 26 below male snap fastener part 28.

The simplicity and convenience of the handling of this new arrangement is evident. While the wearer is dressing, he can snap the exchangeable or detachable white collar on the inner side of the front part, attach right rear end 26, by means of either the Velcro patch or the snap button 30, to the rear of collar 12 to hold it in the correct place, close left rear end 25 of collar 22 by snap fastener 27, 28, and inner wing 13 of collar 12 to collar 22 by snap button 14, 18.

From the foregoing, it is apparent that there is provided a clerical garment comprising a shirt 11 and a detachable collar 22, shirt 11 having front panels a and 10b, panel 10b overlapping panel 10a at substantially the vertical center portion of shirt 11, shirt 11 having a military-style collar 12 secured to panels 10a and 10b. Collar 12 has end portions which overlay at substantially the said vertical center portion. Two associated engageable means, such as snap fasteners 14 and 18 are provided to attach the end portions of wings 13 and 17 together. Female part 18 of the fastener is located away from the center of fly front 16 toward the extremity of overlapping end portion 17. Male part 14 of the fastener is located remote from extremity 15 of portion 13, away from the center of fly front 16. Two associated engageable means, such as a snap fastener 19 and 24, attach the front portion 23 of collar 22 to the front collar 12. Part 24 of the fastener located at the front portion 23 of collar 22 and part 19 is located between snap part 14 and extremity 15 of portion 13. Two more associated engageable means attach rear end portion 26 to the rear of collar 12. By way of example, this means could be snap fastener 21 and 30 or Velcro patches and 29. Rear end portions 25 and 26 are fastened together by associated engageable means such as snap fastener 27 and 28.

While the invention has been described and illustrated with respect to certain preferred examples which give satisfactory results, it will be understood by those skilled in the art after understanding the principle of the invention, that various other changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention and it is intended therefor in the appended claims to cover all such changes and modifications.

What is claimed is:

1. A clerical garment comprising a shirt and a detachable collar, for attachment to said shirt, said shirt having front panels, one of said panels overlapping the other of said panels at substantially the vertical center portion of said shirt, said shirt having a military-style collar secured to said panels, said military-style collar having end portions, one of said end portions overlapping the other of said end portions at substantially said vertical center portion, first two assoicated engageable means for attaching said end portions together, one of said engageable means being located at substantially the extremity of said one of said overlapping end portions of said military-style collar and the other of said engageable means being located remote from the extremity of said other of said end portions of said military-style collar, said detachable collar having a front portion and two rear end portions, second two associated engageable means ataching said detachable collar at the front of said military-style collar, one of said second engageable means being located on said front portion of said detachable collar and the other of said second engageable means being located between said other of said first engageable mean on said militarystyle collar and said extremity of said other of said end portions of said military-style collar and third two associated engageable means attaching said detachable collar at the rear of said military-style collar, one of said third engageable means being located on one of said detachable collar rear end portions and the other of said third engageable means being located at the rear of said military-style collar.

2. A clerical garment according to claim 1, said second engageable means comprising a snap fastener.

3. A clerical garment according to claim 1, said third engageable means comprising self-adhering members.

4. A clerical garment according to claim 3, said second engageable means comprising a snap fastener.

5. A clerical garment according to claim 1, said first, second and third engageable means comprising snap fasteners.

6. A clerical garment according to claim 1 and fourth two associated engageable means to attach said rear end portions of said detachable collar to each other.

7. A clerical garment according to claim 6, said second engageable means comprising a snap fastener and said third engageable means comprising self-adhering members.

8. A clerical garment according to claim 6, said second and said third engageable means comprising snap fasteners.

9. A clerical garment according to claim 6, said first, second, third and fourth engageable means comprising snap fasteners.

10. In a clerical shirt having a fly-front consisting of overlapping outer and inner parts, said shirt having a military-style collar thereon, the ends of said collar be ing stitched to said outer and said inner parts, respectively, an additional detachable collar on said shirt, said detachable collar having two free rear ends, said militarystyle collar being adapted to support said detachable collar: first fastener means on said outer and inner parts, said first means comprising two mating parts, the stitched end of said inner part having one of said mating parts positioned off center of said overlap away from said inner end, the stitched end of said outer part having the other part of said mating parts positioned off center of said overlap toward the end of said outer end, second fastener means at the front center of both of said collars, said second means fastening the front of said detachable collar to the front of said military-style collar, third fastener means on said detachable collar at said free ends of said detachable collar for closing said free ends thereof, and fourth means at the outside of the rear center of said military-style collar and at the inside of one of said free ends of said detachable collar holding the latter in proper position while closing said first, second and third means.

11. In a clerical shirt according to claim 10, and said first, second, third and fourth means comprising snap fasteners.

12. In a clerical shirt according to claim 10, said first, second and third means consisting of snap fasteners and said fourth means comprising mutually cooperating selfadhering fabric material.
