SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,093, dated March 30, 1886.

To all whom it ntay concern:
Be it known that I, JUsTICE GUSSTAVUS SWAN GARWOOD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mount Victory, in the county of Hardin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention.which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of one end of a steam-boiler embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through part of the boiler and one of the dues, showing the thimble in position. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the thimble detached, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.

My invention relates to devices for stopping or preventing leaks in steamboilers where the fines project through the fluesheet. As is well known, after constant use of a steam-boiler, leaks are apt to occur through the flue-sheet at the end of the boiler, and such leaks are stopped usually by expanding the lines by means of what is technically called a tube-expander. Experience has demonstrated, however, that this method of stopping the leak does not always operate,
satisfactorily, and that leaks are apt to occur again at the same place.
The object of my invention is to provide means whereby such leaks may be effectually and permanently stopped in old boilers, and by applying my invention to new boilers greatly lessen the probability of leaks around the fines in the fine-sheet.
To this end my invent-ion consists in an improved thimble adapted to be forced into the fines of the boiler, and overlapping the expanded ends of the dues, substantially as will behereinafter more fully described and claimed.

The thimble or device referred to consists of a short tube or sleeve, D, having a cylindrical bore, but made slightly tapering on the outside, and provided at its larger end with a cup-shaped flange, E, having a sharp rim or edge, F. The tube or sleeve D is of such a size exteriorly that it may be readily forced into the fine by means of a suitable tool, so as to bind firmly therein, and when placed in position it should be forced sufficiently far into the fine to cause the sharp rim of the cupshaped flange to indent the flue-sheet around the outer end of the flue, as clearly illustrated on Fig. 2 of the drawings. Thus it will be seen that the cup-shaped flange will overlap that end of the flue which is expanded in the flue sheet in such a manner as to effectually close the same, and absolutely prevent leaks at that point.
These thimbles can be manufactured at a small expense by proper machinery, and can be applied to a boiler by any ordinary mechanic in a moment of time and with very little trouble.
I am aware that it is not new to construct a thimble for steanrboiler fines, consisting of a tapering sleeve having a cup-shaped flange at its outer end, and I do not claim such construction, broadly; but
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United States The hereiirdescribed thimble for the fines ofsteam-boilers, consisting ofatapering sleeve adapted to fit into the flue. having a cylindrical bore, and provided at its larger end with a curved or cup-shaped flange adapted to overlap the end of the flue where it is expanded in theflne-sheet, the edgeof said flange being sharp. so as to be forced into the face of the flue-sheet, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
