NrTnn STATES JULIAN F. DRAKE, OF TRACY, MINNESOTA.
DETACHABLE BOILER-FLU E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 698,471, dated April 29, 1902.
Original application filed March 26, 1901, Serial No. 52,594, No. 81,167.
To @ZZ whom it may concern: A
Be it known that I, JULIAN F. DRAKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tracy, in the county of Lyon and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Boiler-Fines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same.
My present invention relates to detachable boiler-lines, and has for its object to improve thesame in the several particulars hereinafter noted. l v
The invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described, and defined in the claims.
This application is in the nature of a divi-` sion of my prior application for detachable boiler-fines, Serial No. 52,594, filed March 26, 1901.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein the single view shows a portion of the line-sheet of a fire-box and a flue connected thereto by one of myimproved devices, some parts being shown inV section and others in plan.
The numeral l indicates a flue-sheet, and the numeral 2 one of the dues. The iue=sheet l has flue seats or passages 3, which are somewhat larger than the exterior of the flue 2. These seats 3 are bored without taper-#that is, are of the same diameter'throughout.
The numeral 4: indicates an inwardly-tapered or slightly-conical sleeve, which is se! cured on the end of the Hue 2 by threaded engagement therewith, as shown at 5. This sleeve 4is advisably about one-sixteenth of an inch in thickness at its inner end and about three-'sixteenths at its outer end, although these dimensions may of course be varied. In its outer end said sleeve is preferably provided with several pin-seats/l, into which/,the pin of a pin-wrench may be 'inserted to tighten the sleeve on the tube. A thin packing ring or collar 6, of copper or other relatively soft metal of high fusibility, is `placed around the sleeve 4 and withinthe seat 3 ofthe flue-` sheet. This collar is tapered to lit the exterior of said sleeve, and in view of this taper when it is first tightly pressed between said collar and said seat 3 it will be engaged at its exterior surface only` by the sharp outer edge of the flue-sheet, which is cut to form said seat Divided and this application led November 5, 1901. Serial (No model.)
3. This engagement will indent the said collar and form an annular shoulder, although slight, around the said collar. This shoulder will prevent the collar from being slipped far` ther through the flue-sheet; but under ini creasing pressure, caused by screwing the sleeve 5 farther inward on the iiue, the said relatively soft ring 6 will be caused to fill up any irregularities in the seat 3. This feature is important, since the seats 3 after continued use become irregular, so that it would be difiicult or impossible to form a steam-tight joint therewith by a hard metal, such as iron or steel or even brass.
At its other end--to wit,the end not shown-'J- the flue may be secured to the other ilue-sheet byany suitable device;as, for instance, by the device claimed in my said'prior applica# tion or by another device, such as that herein illustrated.
In some cases the tapered sleeve 5 may be rigidly secured to the tube by brazing or otherwise; but this construction would not be the full. equivalent of that employing the screw-threaded sleeve. A
Vhat I claim, and desire to' secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows 1. In a boiler, the combination with a lluesheet, of a flue having rigidly secured to one end an inwardly-tapering conical sleeve, and a packing ring or bushing of relatively soft material, but of high fusibility, interposed and pressed between the said sleeve and its seat in the ilus-sheet, which packing ring or bushing closely ts said conical sleeve and4 tapers in the same direction therewith, both at its interior and exterior surface, substantially as described.
2. In a boi1er,the combination with the linee' sheet l having the non-tapered seat 3, of the flue 2 having the inwardlytapered conical sleeve 5 screw-threaded thereon, and the ta; pered packing ring or bushing 6 of copper, pressed between said sleeve 5 and seat 3, said ring or bushing 6 closelyfittingsaidsleeve and tapering in the same direction therewith, both at its exterior and interior surface, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JULIAN F. DRAKE.
