FURNITURE CLAMP.
No. 339,061. Patented Mar. 30, 1886.
NIIE rATEs PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES JOSEPH, OF JEFFERSONVILIJE, INDIANA.
FURNITURE-CLAN! P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,061, dated March 30, 1886.
Application filed October 15, 1885. Serial No.l79,i1l8. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES JOSEPH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jeffersonville, in the county of Clarke and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Inr provement in Furniture-Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to clamps adapted for use on tables and other appendages to be tem porarily connected to articles of furniture or the like, whereby such attached articles can be moved in any direction, all as hereinafter described, illustrated in the drawings, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference point out similar parts on each figure, Figure 1 represents my improved clamp as employed on a shelf, table, or on the outer edge of the horizontal portion of an article of furniture. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail elevation of the clamp in one position. Fig. 3 is a similar elevation inaposition at right angles to that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. A is a sectional view taken on the line a; of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 9 y, looking upwardly.
A is the complete casting; A, longitudinal body thereof; A transverse body thereof; a, bore in A; a, bore in A a abutting side of A; B, upper clutch -arm; (l, brace-arm; D, lower clutch arm; E, thumb screw in D; e, swivel at end of E; F, portion of article to which clamp is attached; (,r, thumb-screw to hold shaft II upon a table, bedstead, or any other article.
I illustrate my invention as applied to a device which is shown in Letters Patent No. 252,908, dated January 81., 1882, in order that those skilled in the art to which it is allied may fully understand its functions; but I do not limit myself to such appliances, as it can be used for many purposes, such as copyholder for printers, proof-readers, type-writers. and draftsmen, or for music-stands, &c.
My invention therefore consists in a universal clamp which can be screwed onto any portion of an article of furniture or the like, and adapted to carry a shaft in either a vertical or horizontal position, which shaft carries an attached table or other article that can be extended perpendicularly or horizontally to a predetermined point, and there firmly held adjusted by means of acommon thumb-screw, G. The stem of said thumbscrewenters with in a screw-threaded aperture at the point where the longitudinal and transverse bodies A A cross each other at right angles.
My invention further contemplates the provision of devices for firmly connecting the clamp in position, wherebyitis caused to grip upon three sides, and thereby is prevented from slipping or turning when the pivoted connections are swung around. For this purpose the clutch-arms B and D, which extend outwardly from the main body A, are obliquely inclined therefrom, their inner surfaces being flat, thus accommodating said clutches their full length to the surface of the article to which the clamp is applied. The clutch-arm D is provided with ascrew-tl1readed aperture for admission of the thumb screw E, at the inner end of which is a swivel-disk, e. In addition to the clutcharmsB and D, and at a suitable angle relative thereto, is a bracearm, G,which extends outwardlyfrom the longitndinal body A, also finished flat on its inner surface, adapted to grasp one edge of a bar, table, or the like, and prevent the device from turning, the clutches B andD and brace-arm 0 thus in combination firmly embracing the article to which the clamp is attached.
To enable the clamp to be used in either directionthat is, vertically or horizontally the main stem A,which Iherein call the 1011- gitndinal body, is provided with a bore, a. its full length. At .right angles thereto is a transverse stem, A also bored its full length, and it will be readily understood thatashaft, II, inserted within either of said bores, can be extended any length either vertically or transversely, and firmly held within the respective bore by means of the common thumbscrew G, passing within a screwthreaded aperture at the point where the bored stems A A cross each other at right angles, thus dispensing with separate means of adjustment for each of said members. The abutting side a of Aas sists,in cooperation with other parts, in securing a firm grip.
I do not claim herein a clamp having bored stems crossing each other at right angles, for I recognize that such construction is shown in Patents Nos. 319,146 and 320,9Il; but in no angular corner, and lay no claim thereto, my
brace-arm 0 having the function to take against any part of the side and edge of an article of furniture to which my clamp is attached.
Having now fully described my invention,r 5 what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
A clamp for detachable attachments for furniture, having a hollow main stem, A, clutches B D, and extending brace-arm C, in combina- 20 tion with thumb-screw E, substantially as described.
CHARLES JOSEPH.
