Be it known that I, JOSEPH HAMILL, of Montrose Lot 3, Prince Edward Island, Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Painters7 Striping-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.

My invention relates to a painters tool for marking and striping in paint; and it consists in the parts which will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of my device with the side plate removed. The dotted lines in this view indicate the position of the paint-carrying wheel andthe arms in which it is pivotally mounted when they are withdrawn from the recess in the handle. Fig. 2 is also a side view of the device. In this view the paintwheel and its arms are shown in section. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the upper side of the tool, the handle being partly broken away. Fig. 4 represents several sizes of the striping-wheel. The center View in this figure shows the wheels pivotally mounted inside the arms.

Like letters indicate like parts throughout the several views.

A is the handle.

B is a wheel having removable caps B B.

B2 is a strip vof felt lining covering the perforated surface C.

D D are pivots on caps BB. These pivots are mounted in arms E E, whereby the wheel B is secured in the recess A of the device.

E is a bridge connecting arms E E.

E'l are the pivoted ends of said arms.

F is a spring having one end secured in the recess A and the other end thereof extending out and resting against the bridge E', whereby the arms are kept down and the perforated surface C of the wheel B held against the periphery of the wheel G.

G G are pivots of wheel G. These pivots Work in recesses in arms H H. Said arms are secured to and project from the end of the device. The wheel G is thereby firmly secured, and the perforated periphery of wheel B is held against the periphery of said wheel G, as hereinbefore specified.

The operation of the device is as follows: The wheel B is taken from the arms E and one of the caps B removed therefrom. The wheel is then filled with paint and the cap replaced and the wheel restored to the arms. In re moving said wheel, it can be withdrawn, together with its arms, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. .The end of spring F should be drawn back during such operation, as shown by dotted lines in said iigure. Vhen the Wheel B is iilled with paint and replaced in the recess, the spring F presses against the bridge E of arms E, and thereby holds the two peripheries of wheels B and G together. The paint in wheel B works through the felt Bl andontothesurfaceO. Saidsurfaceissupplied with a quantity of paint. The periphery of the wheel G in moving over the surface C of wheel B takes up and distributes the paint in stripes on the surface over which it is brought in contact.

Various widths of striping-wheels may be used, whereby several Widths of stripes may be produced, or two or more wheels may be placed side by side and several stripes produced at the same time.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a paint-striping machine, the paint box or holder B, provided with a detachable cover, B', and perforated periphery C, and swung in the arms E E, which turn on bearings E2 E2, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

` 2. In a paint-striping machine, the paintboX B, swung between the arms E E, and pressed against the striping-wheel G by a spring, F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth and described.
