i BENCH-vise.

`Specification of Letters Patent No. 3,384, dated December 20, 1843. i

Be it known that I, JEREMIAH PECK, of l/Vaterbury, inthe county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, haveinvented a new and useful improvement in benchvises by combining the lever with t-he `screwpower, the movements being by a rack `and balance-wheel. y

To enable others skilledin the art, to make and use my invention, I describe the construct-ion and operation as `follows. The improved vise 1s made rm to theA bench by the bed `of the rack; For an ordinary sized vise the bed and rack should extend upon the bench about l5 inches, and is made astto` the bench by a screw or bolt at the end and" on each side. rack, one jaw of the vice clasping the same moves easily, in side grooves and may be held in place by a` spring cheek, playing into the teeth of the rack. On the end oi the bed of the rack project-ing over the edge of thebench the other jaw of the vise is attached, by a niortise and tenon, so as to play easily `on a pivot; the lower end of this jaw extending below the pivotfaboutA double the length of the jaw above the pivot, and is armed with a screwl pin atthe lower end governed by aba-lance wheel, the end of the screw-pin pressing agalnst` an arm or fulcrum `descending from the bed ofJ the rack and made fast to the side of the bench. j y

For a more full illustration I refer to the drawings accompanying this specification Gn this as part thereof, in and by which the letter p A, represents the rack and its bed, B the movable jaw with the spring check. C the permanent jaw with the balance wheel` and screw, attached to the lower `end. D, the arm or ulcrum extending downward from the bed of the rack Aand against which the screw pin of the permanent jaw presses.

The operation of this improvedV vise `1s such that by means of the rackl the vise 'can `be opened readily from half an inch to a foot or more, and always `keepingthe jaws square, or with perpendicular faces, and by means of the screw pin at the lower end of the permanent jaw, pressing against the arm of the rack, the power of the lever is added to that of the screw. j j

The advantages are that the jaws arealways lrept square to the worlnor nearly so and by means of the rack have more com pass than ordinary vices, and double the power. The size will vary `according to the use intended. It may be` of wrought or cast iron, j i j i i What l claim-as my invention and desire to secureby Letters Patent is- Thesliding jaw in combination with the i jointed jaw, as herein described; the" former being used to get the vise to any de` sired size and the latter to grip;
