No. 537,785 Claims priority, application Great Britain, Mar. 31, 1965, 13,653/ 65 1 Claim. (Cl. 30-90) This invention relates to guards for safety razors. The type of safety razor using a three-hole blade is used to best advantage if the various edges of the blade are used in rotation, and it is an object of the invention to provide simple means whereby one of the edges may be kept inoperative while the other is used, and then for said other edge to be used while said first edge is kept inoperative.

According to the invention a safety razor blade guard comprises a strip of material having means to secure it adjustably to a safety razor head, said strip being arranged to shield one operative edge of a blade held in said razor head and to present a smooth surface to the face of the user.

The securing means may comprise a clip of springy metal having two fingers arranged to surround detachably the handle of the safety razor at a point close to its junction with the head. The strip of material may be a smooth metal plate shaped to fit around and mask the edge to be guarded. Alternatively the strip of material may be a flexible elastomer or a plastic.

The securing means may comprise a ring embracing the handle of the razor and capable of being swung round said handle for location of the guard over the opposite edge of the blade. Alternatively the guard may be formed of resilient material so as to be a friction fit over one side of the razor head.

The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a first embodiment of the invention,

FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of a safety razor fitted with the first embodiment,

FIGURE 3 is a perspective view of a second embodiment, and

FIGURE 4 is a perspective view of the safety razor fitted with the second embodiment.

Referring to FIGURES 1 and 2, a guard comprises a clip 11 of springy metal having two

fingers

12, 13 arranged to surround detachably the handle 14 of the safety razor at a point close to its junction with the head 15, said clip 11 having extending therefrom a smooth strip 16 masking the edge of the safety razor 17.

The strip 16 is formed of a flexible but fairly stiff material such as polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, or a suitably compounded rubber. It is secured to the clip 11 by a rivet 18. At the end remote from the clip 11 the strip 16 has a lip 19 arranged to lodge on the razor head 3,384,961 Patented May 28, 1968 when the guard has been fitted to the razor head, so as not to contact the cutting edge of the blade 17.

In use, the guard 10 is applied, and the user employs the unguarded opposite edge of the safety razor blade 17 for shaving. If inadvertently he uses the guarded edge, the guard, which is smooth enough to be not uncomfortable on the face, renders the blade inoperative. It is therefore only possible to use one of the edges of the blade. When the razor is next to be used, the guard is used (removed and attached) to cover the razor on the other side, as indicated at 16 and 19' in broken lines in FIGURE 2, so that the edge previously used is now guarded and the fresh unused edge is now exposed for use.

Referring to FIGURES 3 and 4, in another embodiment, a similar spring clip 11 is employed. Attached to it by a rivet 18 is a metal plate 20 having a portion 21 contiguous with the clip 11, a portion 22 inclined away from the razor head 15, and a portion 23 inclined towards the razor and terminating in a lip 24 arranged to lodge on the head 15.

The guard is used in the same manner as has already been described.

Instead of a construction of springy metal, the guard may be of a resilient plastic such as flexible P.V.C. or of a rubber-like material. The guard may be detachable or part of the razor itself and may be so secured by a flexible or resilient means of metal or plastic that it may be drawn away from the guarding position and then swung around the handle and located over the opposite edge of the razor blade so that it does not have to be detached from the razor when the change is being made.

Alternatively, the guard may be formed so as to fit over one side of the head of the razor and be retained there by friction and such a guard can be easily removed by the inherent resilience of the material of which it is made.

I claim:

1. A blade guard for a double edge safety razor comprising clamp means to removably secure the guard to the razor handle at a point close to the junction of the razor handle and head, a guard strip of a fairly stiff flexible material having a length suflicient to shield one of the razor blade edges exposed in the razor head, a flexible member connecting said clamp means and said guard strip to locate and resiliently urge said guard strip towards said one blade edge.

Claims

1. A BLADE GUARD FOR A DOUBLE EDGE SAFETY RAZOR COMPRISING CLAMP MEANS TO REMOVABLY SECURE THE GUARD TO THE RAZOR HANDLE AT A POINT CLOSE TO THE JUNCTION OF THE RAZOR HANDLE AND HEAD, A GUARD STRIP OF A FAIRLY STIFF FLEXIBLE MATERIAL HAVING A LENGTH SUFFICIENT TO SHIELD ONE OF THE RAZOR BLADE EDGES EXPOSED IN THE RAZOR HEAD, A FLEXIBLE MEMBER CONNECTING SAID CLAMP MEANS AND SAID GUARD STRIP TO LOCATE AND RESILIENTLY URGE SAID GUARD STRIP TOWARDS SAID ONE BLADE EDGE.
