PETER F. HELLERSTEDT, OF MORRISON, ILLINOIS.
BUGGY-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,071, dated March 16, 1886.
Application filed November 17, 1885. Serial No. 183,114. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER F. HELLER STEDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Morrison, in the county of llhiteside and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buggy-Springs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a bottom view. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. 3 is a detail in section. Fig. 4 is a detail, and is a side View of one of the hangers. Fig. 5 is a detail, and is a side view.
This invention has relation to vehiclesprings; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the vehicle-body, which is provided on the under face of its side rails, B B, with four hanger-bearings, G O C O in which the ends of half leafsprings H H are journaled. These halfspringsHH bow downwardly, and are clipped immediately at each side of the middle of each spring H H on seats I I, having threaded sleeves J, which latter are connected by a threaded rod or reach, K, which may be turned up to tighten or take up lost motion of the parts; or this reach may be made of one continuous piece of either wood, iron, or any other suitable material.
L L designate half leaf-springs, which are connected by hanger-bearings M to the under faces of the side bars, N N, and these springs L L bow upwardly, and are connected at their middle portions to the angular arms 0 O of the seats I I by clips P.
In front of the spring L and in rear of the spring L are downwardly bowed or curved leaf-springs S S, which connect the side bars, N N, so that the side bars, when connected to the running-gear, have a springing or yielding motion independent of the body.
The end springs, H H and L L, are placed so close together as to form elliptic springs, although they are not connected together, and in case of the breakage of a spring they are much more rapidly and cheaply repaired. The body Ais of such a length that it will not strike the end springs during its movements under any circumstances.
, The hangerbearings M are extended and hold the outside springs, or rather form the bearings against which said springs abut when clipped in place. The end rails, R R, of the body A are recessed in their lower faces, to permit the angular arms 0 O to enter them when the springs are subjected to great shocks, thereby affording the springs greater vertical play than they would have were the recesses omitted.
The hanger-bearings C O O C are all of the same pattern, and comprise the top plate, a, the depending lugs b b, and the journal 0, having integral lugs d d, between which the ends of the half leaf elliptical springs H H are secured. The hanger-bearings may be either bolted or riveted to the body-sills, and place the strain entirely on said sills.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The combination, with the body-sills, and the hanger-bearings secured thereto and provided with journals having integral lugs thereon, and the side bars provided with the hanger-bearings M, of the half-springs H H, the seats I I, connected by the reach K, the upwardly-bowed half-springs connecting the side bars and the seats I I, and the downwardly-bowed end springs connecting the side bars in front of and in rear of the body, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the side bars and body, the half-springs H H, and end springs, L L, of the hanger-bearings clipped to the side bars, the hangers of the body, the angular arms 0 O, and clips P, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with the vehicle-body having the hanger-bearings secured to the are under faces of the sills of the same and pro- In testimony whereof I affix my signature in vided with jburnals having integral lugs therepresence of twowitnesses; t on and, the sidebars provided with hangerbearings M, of the half-springs H H, the seats PETER HELLERSTEDT' 5 I 1, connected by the reach K, and the up- Witnesses: wardly-bowed half-springs connecting the side 7 FRANK D.
