VEHICLE-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 335,953, dated February 9, 1886.
Application filed December 4, 1885. Serial No 184,728. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN WILLIAM PATTER- SON, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Madisonville, in the county of Hopkins and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle- Springs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view seen from the under side of my improved vehicle-spring. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan View, seen from the under side, of a slight modification of the spring; and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the same.

My invention has relation to that class of vehicle-springs in which the springs are di-.
rectly secured to theaxles'and to the bottom of the body without the interposition of sidebars or similar arrangements; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the bottom of a vehicle-body. B is the front axle, and O is the rear axle.
Two downwardly-bulged straps or bails, D and E, are secured at their ends to the bottom of vehicle-body near its middle, transverse to the bottom, and the springs F F are secured at their middles to these bails or straps, the rear ends of the springs diverging from a point between the two bails, and being formed at their extreme ends with two perforations, G G, through which pass the screw-threaded and nutted ends of the clips H, which secure them to the rear axle, near the ends of the same. The straight forward portions of the springs are formed at their ends into transverse eyes I I, in which a transverse bolt, J, rocks, which bolt passes through the downwardly-projecting perforated lips K K, at the ends of a yoke, L, formed at the lower end of the king-bolt M, which turns in a vertical perforation, N, in the front axle.
A flat spring, 0, is secured at its rear end to the forward bail upon the bottom of the spring is bent upward and forward, and has a perforation, P, in its extreme end, which fits upon the upper end of the king-bolt, and is held in place by a suitable nut and washer, Q and R.
In the modification the forward portions of the springs are united to form a single spring, S, which is formed with a transverse eye, T, and secured to the transverse bolt in the same manner as the eyed ends of the two springs, and the brace-spring O is secured to this single spring under the forward bail upon the bot tom of the vehiclebody in place of being secured to the said bail between the two springs.
It will be seen that the springs will yield to longitudinal rocking of the body, and by torsion they will yield to lateral rocking of the body, thus yielding to all movements of the axles and of the body in all directions, and the springs will take the place of side-bars or other intermediate devices placed between the springs and the body of the vehicle or between the springs and the axles, providlng a light and strong running-gear for the vehicle which in case of an accident may be easily replaced or repaired.
Having thus described my invention, I clann and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination, with the body and axles of a vehicle, of springs diverging at the rear ends and secured to the rear axle at their rear ends and at their middles to bails upon the bottom of the vehicle-body, a king-bolt pivotally secured to the forward ends of the springs, and a bracespring secured to the forward hail of the vehicle-body and bent upward and forward at its forward end, and se cured to the upper end of the king-bolts, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. The combination, with the body and axles of a vehicle, of downwardly-bulging bails or straps secured transversely at the middle of the bottom of the body, two flat springs secured at their middles to the balls, and having their diverging rear portions se cured at the ends to the rear axle, and having their parallel forward portions formed with transverse eyes at their ends, a king-bolt having a transverse yoke at its lower end formed In testimony that I claim the foregoing as with downwardly-projecting perforated lips m'y' own I have hereunto affixed my signature at its ends, a transverse bolt passing through in presence of two witnesses. the lips and through the eyes of the springs,
