ANGUS DANIEL MOCALL, OF LAURINBURG, NORTH CAROLINA.
SASH- FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed August 31, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that L'ANGUS D. MOGALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lau: rinburg, in the county of Richmond and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention has relation to improvements in a combined sash-holder and lock; and the novelty consists in the peculiar construction and combination of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of the class described, which shall be capable of use upon either the sash or window- ;frame, which shall be capable of being reversed to serve as a lock to prevent the sash being opened, and as a holding device to hold the sash at any desired point of its elevation, which shall combine simplicity, strength, and durability of construction with efficiency of operation, cheapness, and facility of manufacture, ease of application to and removal from either the sash or window-frame, and which shall dispense with the use of cords and ropes in a sashbalance, as at present universally employed.
I have shown an embodiment of my invention in the drawings, referring to which Figure 1 represents my invention in position for use as a sash-holder upon the sashes of a window. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the device applied as a lock, a'portiou only of the sash and frame being shown. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the locking device.
Referring to the drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures, A designates a window-frame of ordinary construction, and B designates the two sashes, free to slide in grooves a in said frame, and each having my invention applied thereto or adapted to operate thereon.
C designates my improved combined lock and holder, which is made in a single casting, for strength and durability, and is pivoted upon either the window-frame in such juxtaposition thereto that the arms thereof will enas a lock or holder, or pivoted on the sashframe at or near the sides thereof in such jux- Patent No. 336,932, dated March 2, 1886.
Serial No. 175,788. (No model.)
taposition to the window-frame as to engage one of the series of stops formed or arranged thereon, so that said device shall be used either as a lock or holder, all of which will more fully hereinafter appear.
' Each sash is provided with one of the improved locks, which is pivoted, as at c, the pivot-pin passing through a flattened plate, d, having a serrated edge at one side thereof.
I) designates a flange extending around the remaining edges of the plate (Z and adapted to counterbalance the weight of the arms E F, to enable the device to be turned easily and freely on its pivot c. The arm or shoulder E extends laterally from the plate and is provided with a taper to the point thereof, as at c. When the arm E is throwndown in its inclined position, as shown in Fig. 1, it engages one of a series of stops, G, and serves as a lock to prevent the sash from being elevated from the outside or until such lug or arm has been forced from engagen'ient with the stops with which it locks. The arm F extends laterally at right angles, or nearly so, to the arm E, and is preferably curved and tapered, as shown, said arm extending from the rear or under surface of the locking-arm E.
\Vhen the device is in the position shown, Fig. 1, so that the arm F is in engagement withone of the series of stops G and bears against either the frame or the sash, it serves as a holder to secure the sash at any point of its elevation, the lug or arm engaging with the under surfaces or edges of the stops in the latter instance.
The casting C may be pivoted to the sash at one side thereof and engage with the stops G on the wiudow-frame, as shown in the upper half of Fig. 1; or it may be pivoted on the window-frame, so that it will engagethe stops on the window-sash. Either of these arrangements of parts may be employed without departing from the principle of my invention; but in practice I prefer to combine both arrangements in one window, as shown in Fig.
1 of the drawings; but I would have it under- IOO It will be observed that the device is free to turn on its pivot, or be reversed, to bring either of the arms in engagement with the stops, according to the use to which it is designed to put them, and that the heavy tapered flange thereof counterbalances the weight of the arms and makes the device easy of operation.
The device secures great simplicity, sti en gth, and durability, being'cast in one piece and not liable to breakage, is very cheap and easy of manufacture, thus bringing it within the reach of all, can be quickly, easily, and readily applied to and removed from the frame or sash by unskilled persons, and is thoroughly effective and reliable in operation.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The centrally-pivoted circular plate d, having an enlargement or outwardly-projecting lateral flange, D, arranged around a portion of the rim of plate (I, a pointed arm, E, at the termination of the flanged rim D, projecting beyond the serrated plate cl at an angle thereto, and an arm, F, extending outwardly from the rim D at an angle to the arm E, whereby the arm E is adapted to lock the sash and the arm F to serve as a sash-holder when the device is reversed, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
