Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN ATLAS TURLEY, OF COG HILL, TEJNESSEE.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,875, dated February 23, 1886 Application filed Sertembvr 19, 1885. Serial No. 177,582. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN A. TURLEY, of Gog Hill, in the county of McMinn and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being. had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figurel is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of two drawheads of my improved carcoupling, showing them in the act of coupling. Fig. 2 is a front view of one of the drawheads. Fig. 3 is a side view of a draw-head, and Fig. 4 is a perspective detail view of the slide within the draw-head.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to that class of automatic car-couplings in which a common pin and link are used in the coupling, the pin being supported during the act of coupling by a slide which is forced back by the opposite draw-head, releasing the pin and consummating the coupling; and it consistsin theimproved construct-ion and combination of parts of the same, as'hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letters A A indicate the draw-heads, which are constructed and secured to the cars in the usual manner, the draw-heads having the recesses B for the reception of the links, and the vertical perforations G for the reception of the pins D. The draw-heads are preferably formed with enlargements E at the perforations for the reception of the pins, as shown at F, for the purpose of supporting the pins in a vertical position when drawn up prior to coupling. The slides G, which slide in the recesses of the draw-heads, are formed by a plate bent to form an upper horizontal portion, H, a downwardly inclined portion, 1, having a downwardly-turned lip, J, at its end, and an upwardly-bent doubled portion, K, formed by doubling the plate to form the horizontal and the inclined portion, and thereupon bent upward. The horizontal portion and the inclined portion of the slide are provided with perforations L, which register, and which register with the vertical perforations in the top and bottom of the draw-head, the slide fitting within the recessin the draw-head and sliding in the same, the outward movement of the slide being limited by the downwardlyprojecting lip of theinclined portion, which bears against a lug, M, projecting from the bottom of the recess. of the draw-head. The upwardly-bent doubled portion fits in a correspondingly-shaped recess, N, in the face of the draw-head, and a recess or niche, O, is formed in this recess, extending to the upper end of the same and beyond it, so that the point of a coupling-pin may be inserted between the upwardly-beut portion and the face of the draw-head, for the purpose of prying the slide outward, setting the slide for supporting the pin ready for coupling.
The draw-head may be provided with a transverse perforation, P, through which a pin may be inserted, serving to keep the link in a horizontal position, bearing against the upper side of the inner end of the same when a loose coupling has to be made with another car. It will now be seen that when coupling has to take place the slide may be drawn out by means of the pin, which is inserted into the recess or niche, prying the upwardly-projecting portion of the slide out of its recess, and the slide will now 'have its perforations drawn forward of the perforations in the top and bottom of the draw-head, so that the pin inserted through the upper perforation will be prevented from dropping through and will be held upright by the enlargement around the perforation. WVhen now the draw-heads come in contact with each other, the slide will be pushed in and the perforations will register, so that the pin will be allowed to drop down and engage the link, which at this time has entered the draw-head.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination, with a pin-supporting slide having an upwardly-projecting lip, of a draw-head having a recess in its face for the reception of the lip, and having a recess or niche extending beyond the upper edge of the recess for the insertion of a pin for prying the lip out of the recess, as and for the purpose shown andset forth.
2. The combination ofa'draw-head having the usual recess and the usual perforations for the pin, a slide sliding in the recess and having a horizontal portion and a downwardlyinclined portion, and having an upwardlyprojecting lip at its outer end and perforations in the horizontal'portion and in the inclined portion, and a common coupling pin and link, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
3. The combination ofa draw-head having the usual recess and perforation, and having a recess in its face formed with a niche or groove extending beyond its upper edge, a slide in the recess, consisting of a horizontal portion and a downwardly-inclined portion having adownwardly-bent lip at its inner end, and of an upwardly-bent double portion resting in the recess, the inclined and the horizontal portion having perforations registering when the slide is in with the perforations in the draw-head, a pin or lug projecting from the bottom of the recess in the draw-head and limiting the play of the slide bearing against the downwardly-bent lip, and a common coupling link and pin, asand for the purpose shown and at right angles to said horizontal portion,
a downwardly-inclined part having an aperture registering with the perforation in the upper horizontal part, and a downwardlyprojecting lip at the outer end of the inclined part of the plate, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto afiixcd my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN ATLAS TURLEY.
