CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,317, dated June 12, 1883.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JAMES BARRETT, of Beallsville, in the county of Monroe and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Car-Coupling, of which the following is a full,
clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain improvements in my new and improved car-coupling shown and described in Letters Patent No.
259,792,v which were granted to me J une20,
1882, and has for its object to provide means whereby a close coupling of the cars may be effected.
My invention consists in the employment of a coupling pin or plate of considerable length pivoted in the upper forward end of the. drawhead and inclining downward and backward into the throat of the draw-head, the inner and lower end of the pin or plate being suitably notched for engaging with the connectinglink, hereinafter fully described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letter of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a pair of draw-heads made in accordance with my present invention, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the long coupling pin or plate.
A represents the draw-heads; B, the connecting-link; and 0 represents the coupling pins or plates. The draw-heads A are enlarged slightly at the outer ends, as shown at b, and are slotted from the upper side through The coupling pins or plates O are pivoted in these slots upon the pins 6, and from the said pins they incline downward and backward into the throats c, as shown in Fig. 1. The inner ends of the said coupling pins or plates are each notched, so as to form the point or toe t and the offset 5. These offsets i, when the ears are coupled, engage with and hold the connectinglink, and the points or toes t' are adapted to 5 rest upon the upper side of the link when coupled, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, to prevent the plates dropping down too far through the link and becoming locked. The offsets or notches t are made slightly inclined toward head of pin, as shown, so that the plates may be easily disengaged from the links for uncoupling the cars and to permit closer coupling.

These levers are attached to the said plates or pins at their outer ends by means of the eyebolts h, and to their outer ends are attached the rods or levers E, which lead to the top, sides, or platform of the cars, where they can be operated for uncoupling the ears without danger. Then the cars are uncoupled and the connecting-link B comes out of the draw-heads, the coupling pins or plates 0 will drop down and rest at their inner ends upon. 6 5 the bottom of thethroats c, and the pin is again ready for recoupling when the cars meet to gether. The entrance of the link into the draw-head of the opposing car will raise the imrer end of the pin or plate and pass beyond the offset 4/, whereupon the pin or plate'will drop into the link, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and thus automatically couple the cars. For uncoupling, it is only necessary to press down upon the upper end of one of the levers D, 7 5 which will raise the inner end of the pin or plate 0, andthus release the connecting-link. By this construction it will be seen that the link B will be held by the connecting plates or pins, so as to make a close coupling, leaving only sufficient play between the rounded ends of the draw-heads for the cars to pass around curves in the road without breaking, bending,
or otherwise injuring the connecting-link.
Suitable spiral springs may be placed under 8 5 the platform of the cars in a vertical position, the lower ends thereof resting up on the notched ends of the coupling-plates for keeping them from bounding out of place when the cars are in motion; and suitable buttons may be pro- 0 vided for holding the ends of the levers E, or other uncoupling-lever to keep them in place while the ears are in" motion.
