. IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,946, dated July 18, 1876 application filed May 22, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. NUcK0Ls, ot' Millville, Ray county, and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Gar- (Joupling, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a top view of my improved car-coupling, partly in section, to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a side view of one of the dogs.
This coupling is an improvement in the class known as automa'tic; and the feature of novelty is the means for holding the'link at various angles, to adapt it to enter the drawheads of other ears of the smile or different height, and engage with a pivoted couplingpin or other equivalent device, and thus couple two cars together.
The bumper-heads A have long tapering cavities, and a double incline, a, is formed on or attached to the floor thereof. The L- shaped coupling-tun has trunnions b,and is held in place by dogs 0.
When in the vertical position the pin abuts the end walls of the slots' in the top portion and floor of the draw-heads, and is thus enabled to withstand the strain to which it is necessarily subjected by applied traction.
In the rear corner of the cou 'iling-pin B is formed a notch, for convenience in raising it in uncoupling the cars; or a ring may be attached to it, to receive a chain or rod for uncoupling.
E is a spring, the forward end of which is attached to the forward part of the lower side of the bumper-head A, and which passes up and back through the slot in the lower side of said bumper-head.
F is a lever, pivoted to and between two bars, Gr, attached to or formed upon the lower side of the bumper-head A. The forward end of the lever F rests against the lower side of the spring E.
In adjusting the coupling to couple the ears automatically as they are run together, a link, D, is inserted in the cavity of the bumperhead A, and pushed back beyond 'the coupling-pin B. The lever F is then operated to raise the free end of the spring E, and the link is drawn forward beneath it more or p less, according as the forward end of the said link is to be held higher or lower to bring it into a position to enter the bumper-head of theadjacent car as they are run together. As the forward end of the link D enters the bumperhead of the adjacent car and strikes, pushes WILLIAM L. NUGKOLS.
