UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
, GEORGE w. BEDBURY, or PORTLAND, OREGON, ASSIGNOR on ONE-HALF TO A. E. BORTHWIOK, or SA'ME PLACE. I
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,999, dated January 2, 1853.
Application filed June 26,1882. (No model.)
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BEDBURY, a resident ot'the city of Portlaud, in the county of Multno'mah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (Jar-Couplings, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates fto a car-coupling in which the means of coupling or uncoupling cars is attained by constructing the draw-head of the car in two pieces, which perform the functions of draw-head, connecting-pin, and coupling by themselves.
The object of my invention is to constrncta car-coupling which will be strong and simple in operation, and adapted-to cars of uneven 7 height, and in which a strong connectinglink or bar can be used, thereby. obviating the necessity of double links, heretofore required on mountain roads; and my invention consists First. In constructing the draw-head with V. the shank and tongue portion in one piece,
v provided with slotted holes to fit upon the.
with a suitable vertical projection thereon and twolateral projections, and the upper part comprising the top and both sides of the drawhead in another piece, which upper part is 7 attached to car.
In the accompanyingdrawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a side view of two couplings ordraw-heads with link coupled, the dotted lines showing the movement of the parts. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the connecting-bar. Fig. 3 is an end view of the coupling or draw-head, showing the upward motion of the pivoted part; and Fig. 4 is a sectional view of a car with the draw-head or coupling and vertical rod attached.
A A in Fig.1 represent two of my couplings or draw-heads, and B is the. connecting bar or link. o
O is the shank or tongue portion ofthe drawhead.
0 is a vertical projection formed upon the upper side of shank U, and is for the purpose of' preventing the connecting bar or link from go in g too far back when being coupled.
b barelateral projections formed. upon shank 0, upon which fit the slotted holes of upper portion, D, of coupling.
D is the upper portion of coupling or drawhead, and is constructed so as to fit over lower portion, 0, and is pivoted upon the projections b I). Just inside of thejaws portion D is constructed so as to form api-nor hook,c, and hold the connecting-bar when shut down upon it.
E is the vertical rod or shaft for operating the coupling or upper part of draw-head, either from the track or the top of the car. It isjournaled in a box, 2, on car, as shown in Fig. 4, and provided with a handle and log, by which it can be lifted up and suspended.
The upper and lower portions, 0 D, in front form the jaws of the draw-head, as shown in Fig. 4. g
The operation of my improved coupling and 7 draw-head is .as follows: When the cars are brought together the hook-like and grasping manner in which the upper part, .11), holds the connecting bar or link B against tongue or shank O prevents the link B from dropping down, and itis presented to the opposite drawhead or coupling straight and level with the mouth or entrance. As the hook end of link enters, the pivoted upper portion, D, is raised until the hook passes the catch or inside of the jaws and catch-o, when it at once drops to place and catches the hook of liiik B, which operation couples the car. When it is desired to uncouple, then the 'rodis lifted vertically, suflicient play being allowed rod E in box 0 to permit a forward and backward movement, according to the rise or drop of the part D of draw-head. The link or bar B is also provided with slotted openings to be used with the old style of hand-pin coupling. The weight of the 5 part D, pressing down upon the part 0 of the draw-head, insures theconncction of the link therein to a certainty. V V
Having described myinvention, what I claim es new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
r 1. In combination, the tongue-shaped part 0, having vertical projection c and lateral projections bl), and the upper part of coupling D, pivoted upon part 0, operating as shown, and
to for the purpose described.
2. In combination with parts 0 and D, construct'ed'and. operating as herein shown, the link B, for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination with tongue-shaped part 0, the upper pivoted partofcoupling D, adapted 15 to couple with the link B by its weight, substantially as herein shown and described.
enoeen W. BEDBURY.
