Description

(No Model.) V
I. D. RUSSELL & A. W. PERRY. GAR COUPLING.
N0. 532,102. Patented Jan. 8, 1895.
i 'W %M/ Q fimwd/ M I v 7 m NE STATES ISAAC D; RUSSELL AND AMOS WKPERRY, OF WAKEFIELD, 'RHODE ISLAND.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 532,102, dated January 8, 1 8S 5.
Application filed June 5, 1894. Serial No. 513,541- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ISAAC D. RUSSELL and AMOS W. PERRY, citizens of the United States, and residents of Wakefield, in the county of Washington and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplings; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and correctdescription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and letters of reference thereon, which are a part of this specification, and of which drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the coupling, as it is when applied to a car. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section, taken through on line 00. ac. in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a pair of the draw-heads, with the coupling devices coming together, to connect the cars, and Fig. 4 is a view of the latch-plate with its projection c catching into the recess of bar 6' a portion of block 13., shown separate from the rest of the coupling.
These improvements relate more especially to couplings forrailway cars, and consist of a draw head B. made circular in horizontal view, and recessed in its outer end to form a hook which has a block D. held to swing horizontally in a recess on a pin d. that passes down through the sides of the recess and said block D. This block D. has also a tongue a, extending out from one side and a recess or chamber is made in the head B. to receive the end of the tongue when it is swung around into it, in the act of coupling the cars together. A vertical recess f. is made across the middle of the head B. with bar e. to receive the latchplate 5', (shown separately in 'Fig. 4.) This latch plate s. has a recess or notch r. made in it from its under side to go over the bar 6'. and receive the end of the tongue at. when it is swung in, to couple the cars, as shown in Fig. 2, and a projection 0. made on the lowerinner side of the latch-plate s. fits into a recess under the bar a, which is a part of the head 13., and prevents the latch-plate from being thrown up by the jolting of the train of cars, and uncoupling them, as the strain pulling on the head of the block D. will push laterally and hold the latch-plateby the tongue a. in the notch 'r. with the other end of said latch-platein and under the recess f. The right hand lower corher of the notch r. is beveled away a little to allow the end of the tongue a. to push in under and raise the latch-plate and when the tongue a. has passed clear into the notch r. the plate will fall of its own weight and hold the tongue in securely until it is raised to uncouple the cars.
For the purpose of unlatching the tongue to allow the block D. to swing out and unlock the coupling, a vertical bar or pin '0. is fitted to slide easily in ahole made for it down through the head B. just back of the left hand end of the recessf. and a horizontal arm 'n. is attached to the lower end of the bar or pin '0.
so as to project under the outer end of the o5 latch-plate s. and raise it, when the rod or pin '0 is pulled up;
To raise the'rod or pin '0. and unlock the coupling from the top of the car a vertical bar J. is held to slide in brackets attached to the end of the car, and instead of the usual chain-connection (which on account of necessary motion of the drawhead, in and out, will at times be quite loose and liable to loop or kink one link into another, especially on curves, and be broken) a horizontal arm g. is secured to the lower end of said bar J. that projects out under a pin 0 inserted'in the upper inner side of the said vertical bar or pin 1)., so that when the bar J. is drawn up, the So arm will raise the bar or pin o'and latchplates. and release the tongue a., which as before explained will allow the coupling to unlock.
To unlock the coupling from one side of the car, a lever c,is pivoted on the end of the car, with its inner end extending under va projection on the side of the bar J. and another longer lever h. is also pivoted on the end of the car, just below the lever 0. so that when the outer end of the lever h. which projects out to, or near the side of :the car, is pulled down, its inner end will raise the bar J. and bar or pin v. with latch-plate s. and release the tongue as before described. 5
The latch-plate s. is not hung on a pin but has an extension m, with a recess beneath on its right hand end which catcheson a portion of head B. and servesas a fulcum, when the outer end is raised by the arm 'n.
' A recess 15 is made in the end of block D. to receive an ordinary link in case it is necessary to couple it with a car provided with link coupling heads, and a bolt pin "y. is in- IOO serted down through the block to hold the link.
Fig. 3 shows the automatic action of the parts when connecting'two cars together. No more is required than to bring the two cars together, when the inner end of each block D. will push against the tongue at. of the other block in the other coupling and turn it around, into the chamber and under the latchplate 8. which will drop when the tongu e reaches the notch r. and hold it from turning back, so that the heads of the blocks D. will be firmly locked together as in Fig. 2.
The flange t on the inner edge of the tongue (it. helps to hold the hook heads of the couplings together, in case the outer point of the curve in the head 13. is broken off by accident, and saves trouble.
To disconnect a pair of these couplings, from the top of a car it is only necessary to draw up the bar J. by the handle on its upper end which will raise the bar or pin 12. and latch-plate s. by the arm n. on the lower end of the bar, and leave the tongue at. free to swing out of the notch r. and turn on its pivot 01. so as as to release the block D. in the other coupling and the cars will be free to draw apart.
To unlock the coupling from one side of the car, the outer end of the lever h. is depressed, which causes its inner end to raise the lever c. and bar J. which lifts the bar or pin 1). and latch-plate s. and releases the tongue at before described.
By this improved arrangement a reliable coupling is obtained, that is automatic in its action in making connections and one that can be operated with perfect safety, in all cases, by the operator and is more simple, strong, durable and cheap to make, and is less liable to get out of order or break and cause trouble.
Having thus described our improvements in couplings, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a carcoupling, a draw-head, horizontally recessed in its end to receive a swinging block, held in said recess byapin, in combination with said block alatch-plate, loosely held in a recess in said head, and havinga notch to receive the inner end of said block with a projection on its other end to serve as a fulcrum, in being raised and a vertical bar or pin, provided with an arm to raise said latch plate, substantially as described.
2. In a car coupling, the combination of a draw-head, having ablock movably held, in a recess in its end, by a pin, a latch-plate, unpivoted and loosely held in a recess in said head, a vertical bar or pin held loosely in a hole in said head and provided with an arm to raise said latch-plate, with a vertical sliding bar, held on the end of the car and provided with an arm, to lift said latch raising bar or pin substantially as set forth.
3. In a car coupling a drawhead horizontally recessed in its end, a swinging block pivoted therein a pivotless latch-plate, held in a recess in said head, and having a recess in its lower side, to receive a tongue on said block, a vertical bar attached to the end of the car having a horizontal arm arranged to raise a vertical bar or pin, held in a holein the head, and an arm on said vertical bar or pin, to raise said latch-plate and two levers pivoted to the end of the car having connection with said vertical bar, substantially as set forth.
4. In acarcoupling of the character herein described, the combination of a swinging block havinga tongue to hold it, when coupled with a pivotless latch-plate held in a recess, in the head, having a projection at one end, and a notch and projection at its other end, with recesses in portions of said head and latch-plate, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
5. In a coupling of the character described the combination of .the vertical bar J. arm g. and bar or pin 1). provided with arm n. for the purpose of disconnecting the coupling, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
