PRESSER-BAR FOR PLANlNG-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,860, dated February 23, 1886.

To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, DAVID C. KRUM, a cit-izen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pressure-Bars for Planing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the fol lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain improvements in pressure-bars for planing-machines.
It consists in a certain novel construction and arrangement of a pressure-bar consisting of a seriesof independent fingers or sections and the operating springs and devices for adjusting the same, whereby lumber of variable thickness may be firmly held to the bed ofthe machine, the ngers or sections being adapted to adjust themselves to the inequalities on the surface of the lumber, all of which I will now proceed to point out and describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a vertical longitudinal section of a planing-machine provided with my im` provement. Fig. 2 is an end elevation with the rotary cutter removed; Fig. 3, a top plan View, and Fig. 4 a detail.
Referring to said drawings, A is the bedplate of the machine; B B, the feed-rollers; C, a rotary cutter; D, a plank iu position to be planed.
E E are two upright standards on the bedplate. To the standards are secured two bars, F F, parallel to each other and in a plane parallel to the bed-plate.
G G are a series of independent lingers or sections forming a pressure-bar, said tingers or sections being hinged on a cross-rod, a, secured to the bars F F. rIhe fingers G are provided with beveled ends b, which engage with the board and hold it firmly on the bedplate, as hereinafter described.
c are shoulders on the sides of the fingers next to the cutter.
d is a cross-bar secured to the bars F F and having the dependent portion d', with which the shoulders c on the lingers engage as they are moved toward the cutter, and thus limit their motion in the direction of said cutter and prevent them from coming in contact with the same.
e are upwardly-projecting lever-extensions on the pressure-fingers. g
H H are a series of independent levers fulcrumed on a rod, f, secured to the bars F F, the number of said levers corresponding to the number of the pressure-fingers, and their short arms h engaging with the extensions e.
I is a bridge secured to the bars E E.
i are a series of independent springs secured to the under side ofthe bridge I. Said springs bear on the long arms of the levers H H, forcing them down and elevating the lever-extensions e of the pressure-fingers G G, to cause the beveled ends b to engage with the board which is being planed and firmly hold it against the bed-plate.
K are a series of set-screws, by which the tension of the springs is regulated.
The pressure fingers or sections, being entirely independent of each other, readily adapt themselves t-o the inequalities of the lumber which is being planed, and at the same time hold it firmly on the bed-plate.
With a pressure constructed as above described two or more boards of different thickness' can be planed at the same time.
My invention can be used with equal advantage on molding and matching machines as on ordinary planers. It issimplein construction, very strong, and so arranged that it is almost impossible to get out of order, and in case ci' breakage of any one of the ingers, levers, or springs it can be readily lreplaced without taking the entire pressure-bar apart.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a planing machine, a presser bar consisting of a series of independent presser fingers or sections having lever extensions and mounted on a transverse rod above the bed of the planer, in combination with a corresponding series of levers engaging with thev extensions of the presser-fingers and each provided with a spring, all arranged and operating to the end that the springs will hold the levers in engagement with the extensions of the pressertingers and operate said lingers, substantially as shown and described.
