To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. DUNTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in- 00dworkingddachines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in woodworking machines.
T he objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved machine of this type in which the tonguing and grooving operation is completed at one movement of the machine. Second, to provide an improved woodworking machine, having improved adjusting means for squaring up the work. Third, to provide in a machine of this type, an improved clamp to'hol'd the lock of wood to be operated upon.
Further objects, and objects relating to details and economies of structure and operations will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the followingspecification.

By this means, the trough 2 is adjustably secured to the face of the Work table. At the ends, the work table is provided with a plurality of tapered openings 6, 6, in which a tapered pin 7 is adapted to seat, the tapered pin passing through a suitable opening 8 provided in the trough 2. By this means a very delicate adjustment of the trough laterally is secured, by means of which the trough is secured with its edges parallel to the edges of the table and at varying distances therefrom depending upon the size of the block to be operated upon.
About midway of the work table, is provided a spindle 9 passing through said table and 'carryingthereon the grooving cutter head 10'. The grooving cutter head 10 is provided with an annular cutting edge 12. Beneath this cutter is a circular disk slightly larger in circumference than the'cutter, both this and the cutter resting on a shoulder on said spindle. Between the disk and cutter may be placed spacing disks which vary the distance of the groove from either the top or bottom ofthebleck of- Wood. It is usually desirable to have the groove come exact'ly midway and by this means the distance may be varied according to the thickness of the disksemployed. In line with said grooving cutter head and on the opposite side of the'troug'h therefrom, is provided a'tonguing cutter head 14- which is similarly mounted on a bolt, 15; and spaced from the work table by means of the sleeve 16. This tonguing cutter head, instead of being mounted in a fixed position. as is the'grooving' cutter head, has the spindle 15 passing through a slot 18 provided in the work table, so that the distance of the tonguing cutter head from the trough may be regulated by moving the spindle 15 back and forth in the slot 18. By means of this adjustment, and the adjustment of the trough relative to the work longitudinally thereof, which add to the strength of the structure. These ribs are connected by means of a pair of cross pieces 24, 24.
25 is the clamping plate which is provided with the cut away portions 26, 26, at each end thereof. The bottom of the clamping plate is provided with a plurality of studs 27 which are fixed in the lower face of the clamping plate and project so as to bite into the block of wood held in the clamp. The clamping plate 25 is supported by means of headed pins 28 and 29, threaded into said clamping plate. extending upwardly therefrom and passing through suitable perforations in the top plate 21. For each of these pins. springs, such as 30 and 31 are provided. said springs being confined between f the heads of the pins and the top plate 21,
so that the springs tend to force the clamping plate toward the top plate. The pair of springs 31, 31, which are provided on the front pins 29. 29. are stronger than the springs 30. 30, on the top pins 28. 28. The
. obiect of this will be hereinafter set forth.
e The clamping plate is provided with a beveled groove or channel 32 opening into the rear cut away portion 26. A fork like cam member 33 is provided. having a handle 34 and pivoted on a rod 35 which is secured to the ribs 23, 23, of the top plate. The cam member 33 has cams on either branch of the fork thereof. To these cams is secured the rod 36 which carries the spring strip 37 forming a claw member having its rear end wrapped around said rod 36. The forward end of said spring strip 37 is 'struck down wardlv as at 38 and provided at its lower 'end wi h'a pluralitv of teeth 39 which en- 7 gage the block of wood 40 within the clamp.
A tongue 41 is struck back from the spring strip 37 near its forward end, and this so as to liftthe spring strip 37 as the cam member is turned to release the block. This 7 helps to lift the claw member out of contact with the wood.
The clamping plate 25 carries near the end of the groove 32, the headed pins 42 which are threaded into the clamping plate,
and pass through suitable perforations 1n the bar 43, which rests on top of the cl amping plate above the groove 32. Compression springs 44 are confined between said bar 43 and the heads of the pins 42, said springs tending to hold the bar 43 normally in engagement with the clamping plate.
The clamp is provided with a bar45extending transversely thereof at the rear end of the base plate and which is pivotally mounted on a pin 46 carried by said'base plate centrally thereof. Screws 47 are threaded into the corner posts 20 adjacent said bar 45 and'the inner ends of said screws 47 engage the ends of the bars 45. These screws are provided'with lock nuts 48 for holding them in adjusted position. By this means,the bar 45 may be adjusted relative to the base plate. In front of this bar is a block 49 provided with a suitable opening therethrough through which the set screw 50 passes and engages in a screw threaded opening 51 in the bottom of the base plate. The inner edge of this block 49 engages the bar .45 and when the screw 50 is loosened, the block 49-is moved back and forth with the bar 45. The block of wood 40 is disposed to abut against this block 49 and it is trued up in the clamp by this means. At either end of the clamp a rod '52 is secured between the corner posts 20 and these rods 52 carry the links 53, which links are connected to a propelling chain or belt 54 pass ing over suitably mounted pulleys or sprocket wheels 55 at the ends of the table. Power is applied to this propelling chain to move the clamp back and forth longitudinally of the table. The means by which this is done are immaterial, forming no part of my invention,
The bottom of the base plate is provided with a plurality oflongitudinal grooves56, 56, in which are disposed a plurality of balls .57, 57. Plates 58, 58, are secured to the the bottom of the trough so that it will move easily therein.

The handle 34: is then pulled up which brings the thicker portions of the cams into engagement with the top clamping plate and forces the same downwardly against the action of the springs and 31 into engagement with the block of wood which has been placed within the clamp. Inasmuch as the greatest force is first exerted on the front portion of the clampim plate, the springs 31 at this point, are made stronger than the spring 30. As theclamping plate is pressed downwardly, the studs 27 bite into the block of wood and hold it against twisting and turning. At the same time that the cam is brought into operative position, the claw member 37 provided with the teeth 39, is brought forward and pressed downwardly so that it bites into the block of wood and shoves the same into abutting engagement with the block 49. lhe bar 43 engages this claw member and since this bar is held resiliently in position by the springs dd, after the teeth have taken hold of the block of wood, the bar i3 will yield and allow the claw member to move upwardly somewhat so that theteeth will not be forced to an inordinate depth into the block of wood.
After the block of wood has been fixed in the clamp, and clamped .in position, the clamp is drawn the length of the table by means of the belt or chain, the base plate of the clamp riding in the trough fixed on the work table. This carries the block woon between the tonguing and grooving cutter heads 10 and 14 so that a groove is cut in one edge of the block and a tongue is cut in the other edge. The block is then removed and the clamp is returned to its original position to receive another block.
In order to insure that the groove and the tongue are cut to the same depth throughout the length of the block, it is necessary that the trough extend at right angles to the line drawn through the centers of these two cutter heads. This adjustment is accomplished by means of the bolts 3 engaging in the slots 5. The block of wood is abutted against the block d9 and this is adjusted relative to the base plate means of the bar d5, which. can be moved back and forth by means of the bolts 47, carried by the corner posts 20.
I have shown my improved clamp and carriage in connection with tongue and groove cutter heads and adapted to carry a block of wood between them. Cutter heads of other types, or saws may be used. without departing from the spirit of my in vention.
I am aware that the particular embodiment which I have here set forth is susceptible of considerable variation without departing from the spirit of my invention, and. therefore, I do not wish to be restricted to the same. I have found, however, that this particular form is to be preferred, and therefore I desire to claim the same specifically as well as broadly as indicated by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a table member, a channel shaped trough member adjustably secured to said table member centrally thereof, a pair of cutter heads mounted on opposite sides of said trough member, one of said cutter heads being adjustable relative to the other, a clamp member adapted to engage a block of wood to carry it between said out ter heads and having a base portion slidably mounted in said trough member, and means for reciprocating said clamp member, all coacting substantially as described and for the purpose specified 2. In a structure of the class described, a clamp comprising a base plate, corner posts carried by said base plate, a top plate consisting of a pair of ribbed bars secured to the corner posts and connected by cross pieces, a clamping plate having its lower side provided with pointed studs disposed between said base plate and said top pla e, headed pins carried by said clamping plate and extending through openings in said top plate, compression springs confined bewecn the heads of said pins and said top late, a cam member pivotally mountec between said bars and disposed to engage said clam; ing plate to force it downwardly against the tension of said springs, a claw member carried by said cam member haa'ing its rear end turned downwardly and provided with teeth, said end passing through a suitable opening in the clamping plate, a bar resting on the top of said clamping plate above said claw member and slidable on a pair of headed pins carried by said clamping plate. springs confined between the heads of said pins and said bar and normally pressing said bar into engagement with said clamping plate, a block extending transversely of the base plate secured thereto by means of a set screw extending centrally therethrough, a bar extending transversely of the plate behind said block and pivot-ally mount ed on a pin centrally disposed therein, and set screws carried by the rear oair of corner posts and engaging the ends of said bar for adjusting the same, all coacting substantially as descrioed for the purpose specified.
3. In a structure of the class described, a clamp comprising a base plate, corner posts carried by said base plate, a top plate consisting of a. pair of ribbed bars secured to the corner posts and connected. by cross pieces, a clamping plate having its lower side provided with pointed studs disposed between said base plate and said. top plate,

headed pins carried by said clamping plate and extending throughopenings in said top plate, compression springs confined between the heads of said pins and said top plate, a cam member pivotally mounted between said bars and disposed to engage said clamping plate to force it downwardly against the tension of said springs, a claw member car ried by said cam member having its rear end turned downwardly and provided with teeth, said end passing through a suitable opening in the clamping plate, a bar resting on the top of said clamping plate above said claw member and slidable on a pair of headed-pins carried by said clamping plate,

7 In a structure of the class described, a clamp comprising a base plate, corner posts carried by said base plate, a top plate consistin of a pair of bars secured to the corner posts and connected by cross pieces, a clamping plateprovided with pointed studs on its lower side disposed between said base plate and said top plate, headed pins carried by said clamping plate and extending through openings in said top plate, com pression springs confined between the heads of said pins and said top plate, a cam'member pivotally mounted between said bars and disposed to engagesaid clamping plateend passing through a suitable opening in the clamping plate, a bar resting on the top of said clamping plate above said claw memher and slidable on a. pair of headed pins carried by said clampingplate, springs confined between the headsof said pins and said bar and normally pressing said bar into engagement with said clamping plate, a block extending transversely of the base plate and secured thereto by means of'a set screw extending centrally therethrough, a bar extending transversely of the base plate behind said block and pivotally mounted on a pin centrally disposed therein, and means for adjusting said bar relative to the base plate, all coacting substantially as described for purpose specified.

In a structure of the class described, a clamp comprising a base plate, corner posts carried by said base plate, a top plate, a clamping plate disposed between said base plate and said top plate, headed pins carried by said clamping plate, and extending through openings in said top plate, comprcssion springs confined between the heads of said pins and said top plate, a cam member pix'otally mounted on said top plate and disposed to engage said clamping plate to force it downwardly against the tension of said springs, a block extending transversely of the base plate and secured thereto by means of a set screw extending centrally therethrough, a bar extending transversely of the base plate behind said block, and pivotally mounted on a pin centrally disposed therein, set screws carried by the rear pair oi" corner posts and engaging the ends of said bar for adjusting the same, ball cages provided on the bottom of said base plate and ball bearings disposed in said casing, all coacting substantially as described for the purpose specified.

In a structure of the class described, a clamp comprising a base plate, corner posts carried by said base plate, a top plate, a clamping plate disposed between said base plate and said top plate, headed pins carried by said clamping plate, and extending through openings in said top plate, compression springs confined between the heads or" said pins and said top plate, a cam member pivotally mounted on said top plate and disposed to engage said clamping plate to force it downwardly against the tension of said springs, a block extending transversely of the base plate and secured thereto by means of a set screw extending centrally therethrough, a bar extending transversely of the base plate behind said block, and pivotally mounted on a pin centrally disposed therein, set screws carried by the rear pair of corner posts and engaging the ends of said bar for adjustin the same, all coacting substantially described for the purpose specified.

cam member pivotally mounted between said bars and disposed to engage said clamping plate to force it downwardly against the tension of said spring means, a claw member carried by said cam member having its rear end turned downwardly and provided with. teeth, said end passing through a suitable opening in the clamping plate, a bar resting on the top of said clamping plate above said claw member and slidably supported relative to said clamping plate, and means pressing said bar into engagement with said clamping plate, all coacting substantially as described for the purpose specified.
13. In a structure of the class described, a clamp comprising a base plate, corner posts carried by said base plate, a top plate consisting of a pair of bars secured to the corner posts, and connected by cross pieces, a clamping plate disposed between said base plate and said top plate, headed pins carried by said clamping plate and extending through openings in said top plate, spring means supporting said clamping plate, a cam member pivotally mounted between said bars and disposed to engage said clamping plate to force it downwardly against the tension of said spring means, and a claw member carried by said cam member having its rear end turned downwardly and provided with teeth, said end passing through a suitable opening in the'clamping plate, all coacting substantially as described for the purpose specified.

In a structure of the'class described, a clamp comprising a base plate, corner posts carried by said base plate, a top plate carried on said corner posts, a clamping plate disposed between said base plate and said top plate, headed pins carried by said clamping plate and extending through openings in said top plate, compression springs confined between the heads of said pins and said top plate, a fork-like cam member pivotally mounted in said top plate and disposed to engage said clamping plate to force it downwardly against the tension of said springs, a rod carried transversely of said fork-like cam member, a claw member comprising V a strip having its forward end wrapped around said rod and having-its rear end turned downwardly and provided with teeth, said end passing through a suitable opening in the clamping plate, a bar resting on the top of said clamping plate above said claw member and slidable on a pair of headed pins carried by said clamping plate, springs confined between the heads of said pins and said bar and normally pressing said bar into engagement with said clamping plate, all coacting substantially as described for the purpose specified.
