(Cl. 19-261) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A textile drawing apparatus for high production carding machines, which apparatus is intended for drafting a fleece discharged at high output speeds by such a carding machine, comprising, in combination, sets of cooperating upper and lower rollers, urged together by spring means, one of the said lower rollers being mounted in a U-shaped member pivoted to the support structure of the drawing apparatus, so that the distance between the sets of cooperating rollers may be adjusted in order to adapt the apparatus to the length of the fibers to be drafted.
The apparatus according to this invention is intended particularly for drawing a fleece discharged from a carding machine of modern design and high output, for example, 20 kilograms and more per hour.
As known in the art the dofler of the carding machine has to run at a very high speed to discharge a relatively thin fleece. The said fleece is subject to relatively high partial drafts, that may be uncontrolled, between the dolfer and the calendering apparatus that forms a sliver of the required hank number.
In these high output carding machines, the dofling comb is compelled to vibrate at excessively high speeds of l800-2000 strokes per minute and more, which speeds are difiicult to maintain.
For this reason the dofling combs in some cases have been replaced by dofiing rollers but this requires an excessive draft between such rollers and the calendering apparatus. This is detrimental to a uniform sliver as required for a satisfactory processing. The said uncontrolled draft efiectively causes significant irregularities to the sliver that influence negatively the quality of the final product. In effect, the calendering apparatus can not modify the said draft so as to bring it to the values required for the successive processings of the sliver.
An object of this invention is to provide a textile drawing apparatus that gives the following advantages:
(1) Reduction of the dolfer comb speed;
(2) Elimination of the uncontrolled draft of the fleece between the dofling combs or doffing rollers and the drawing apparatus;
(3) The possibility of working slivers with relatively long fibers (particularly artificial fibers);
(4) The possibility of adapting the apparatus to the length of the fibers to be worked in a continuous manner;
(5) The possibility of working with a high inlet speed of the fleece.
With these objects in view the present invention provides a textile drawing apparatus particularly for high production carding machines, which apparatus is intended for working a fleece which is discharged from such a carding machine at high output speeds, said apparatus comprising sets of upper and lower pressure rollers, urged together by spring means, and means to adjust the distance between the sets of rollers.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description when read in con junction with the accompanying drawings.

FIGS. 5 and 6 are, respectively, front and side views of a U-shaped member for pivotally mounting one of the lower rollers which adapts the apparatus so that it can be used to process fleeces having long or short fibers.
With reference to the drawings in detailed and particularly to FIGS. 1 and 2, the apparatus according to my invention comprises substantially three driven lower drawing rollers 11, 12 and 13 and two upper drawing rollers 15, 16, the latter rollers being mounted as idlers and being spring urged by means of a pressure device illustrated in FIGS. 3 and 4 so that the upper roller 15 presses against the lower rollers 11 and 12 and the upper roller 16 presses upon the lower roller 13.
A transmission gearing (not represented) is provided to rotate the rollers 11, 12 and 13 in the direction of the arrows, whereby the speed of the roller 13 may be modified in order to vary the draft of the fleece V.
According to my invention, a U-shaped member 17 is provided having two upright arms 17A and 17B which are arranged outside the support structure SB of the apparatus. The arms 17A and 17B are rigidly connected with one another by a horizontal rod 17C mounted to turn in two supports 18 and 19 connected to the lower frame SA of the support structure by means of two screws 21 and 23. Therefore, the U-shaped member may be swung according to the direction of the arrows PA or PE and may be locked in the required position by tightening a bolt 24 cooperating in a manner known per se with an arc shaped slot 25 formed in the arm 17A. A similar locking device may be provided in the opposite arm 17B of the U-shaped member.
In order to readily determine the distance between the rollers 12 and 13 so as to adapt this distance to the staple length of the material to be drawn, one can provide a graduation cooperating with a pointer fixed to the member 17.
As will be apparent from FIG. 6, each arm 17A, 17B is formed with an axial projection 26A, 26B, each having a recess 27A, 27B housing a ball bearing C that supports the shaft 13A of the lower roller 13. In order to permit the member 17 to be freely pivoted, from the lateral frame SD of the apparatus, openings 29 are cut therein, which openings constitute one end stop of the U-shaped member 17. It is necessary to seal the openings to prevent dust infiltrating into the inside of the apparatus, and for this purpose plates 31 are provided, represented in chain dotted lines, and fixed to the projections 26A, 26B so that the openings 29 are sealed in any position of the U-shaped member. FIGS. 3 and 4 illustrate the pressure device that permits a pressure to be exerted upon the stationary shafts 15A, 16A of the two upper rollers 15, 16 for applying the necessary draft to the fleece V. This pressure device comprises a fork shaped member 32 having two longitudinal arms 32A in which three pressure devices 34, 35 and 36 are provided in each arm. Only one pressure device 32 has been illustrated in sectional view in FIG. 3. Each device comprises a piston 37 slidably mounted in a cylindrical recess 38 formed in the arm 32A, and
subjected in an adjustable manner, to the pressure of a spring 39. One end of the spring 39 rests upon a base of the piston 37, while the other end is controlled by a pressure adjustment screw 41. The fork-shaped member 32 is pivoted at 4 to the lateral frame SD by means of two pivot pins 42, 43 which permit it to be swung in the direction of the arrows FL and FD, respectively. At the frontal side 32D of the member 32, a lever 45 is pivoted at 47 forming an eccentric pivot 46. The latter cooperates with a U-shaped lever 49 secured to member 32 and pivoted to the lateral frame of the apparatus.
It will be apparent that by positively swinging the lever 45 towards the dotted position (FIG. 4), the eccentric pivot 46 will press upon the stationary intermediate section of the lever 49 and therefore apply pressure in the direction of arrow FL to the member 32 will be caused, namely the pistons 37 will elastically press upon the shafts 15A and 16A of the upper rollers 15 and 16, respectively. It will be apparent that the elastic pressure is caused by the compression of the springs 39 when the eccentric pivot slides along the intermediate section of the lever 49. If the U-shaped member 17 is displaced beyond a distance in the direction of the arrow FA, it may be suitable to displace the shaft 16A from the notch 52 to the notch 53 of the frame so that a fleece of longer staple fibers may be drawn. At the same time a more central pressure is exerted upon the lower roller 13.
A cleaning roller 54, indicated in dotted line in FIGS. 1 and 2, is mounted to engage the peripheries of the rollers 15 and 16.
While a preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, it is to be understood that modifications may made to the invention within the spirit and the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim:
1. A textile drawing apparatus for working a fleece discharged from a carding machine of high output, comprising in combination, a support structure, one first (13) and two other lower rollers (11, 12), a first (16) and a second upper roller (15), elastic means (34, 35, 36) for pressing the said first upper roller (16) against the said first lower roller (13), and the said second upper roller (15) against the two other lower rollers (11, 12), a U-shaped member (17) pivoted (13, 19) to the said support structure and carrying the said first lower roller (13), means (25, 24) for locking in a desired pivoted position the said U-shaped member (17) and consequently the said lower roller (13) so as to vary the distance between the nip of said first upper roller (16) and the said first lower roller (13) and the nip of the said second upper roller (15) and one (12) of the said other lower rollers (11, 12), the said U-shaped member (17) comprising two upright arms (17A, 178) each formed with a hollow projection (26A, 26B) facing with one another, a ball bearing (C) being mounted into each said hollow projection to rotatably support the said first lower roller (13), the said support structure presenting two openings for permitting the passage of the said hollow projections, the said upright arms (17A, 17B) each presenting a covering plate (31) to seal the corresponding opening in the said support structure.
