Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
HERMAN FR. THIEMEYER; OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVED RAILROAD-SWITCH.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,669, dated November 5, 1861.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN FR. THIEMEYER, ofBaltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State lof Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Railroad-Switches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My improvement in railroad-switches consists in providing the same with a series of recesses accompanied bya series of lugs or stops for the purpose of allowing the dirt to work out and of preventing the tongue from being sprung, and also in the mode of fastening the tongue.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a top View of my improved railroad-switch. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same.
In the drawings, A A represent the sleepers, to which the bed-plate B is fastened. This bed-plate is cast with a series of recesses b for allowing the dirt to work out, and also a series of lugs or stops c for the tongue L when open to abut against, in order to prevent the tongue L from bending under aheavy strain. These lugs c are curved on the side next the tongue, so as to allow the dirt to escape freely and not be caught between the tongue and the lugs or stops. The tongue is cast with an enlarged bearing e, which is countersunk in the bed-plate to prevent breaking the bolt i. The
and the rail I.
bar II by means of the lip x and a small bolt and nut m. This arrangement forms a very secure fastening and prevents the possibility of throwing the tongue out of place.
In order to insert the bolt m it is necessary to have an opening in the bottom of the bedplate, as indicated by dotted lines, Fig. 1.
One end of the bar H is fastened to the connecting-rod O, and the other end may be bolted to another rod extending to the tongue on the opposite side of the track.
At the tip of the tongue apeculiarly-formed lip Ris cast with the bed-plate, in order to give a secure connection between the tongue and lthe rail.
The arrangement of the lever IJ and other parts not particularly described may be in the usual manner, and the details of my improvenient may be somewhat varied without departing from my invention.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The use of the recesses hand the lugs or stops c in the bed-plate or casting B, substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
2. rIhe Inode of fastening the tip of the. tongue to the bed-plate by the bar H sliding under the rail I and the lip G, substantially as described.
HERMAN FR. THIEMEYER.
Iitnessesz EDM. F. BROWN, DANIEL BREED.
