Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. STOLERAND S. A. SISSON, OFV BRISTOL, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CUTTING APPARATUS FOR HARVESTERS.
Spccificationforming part of Letters Patent No. 33,966, dated December 17, 1861.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, ABRAHAM SToLER and SAMUEL A. SrssoN, both of the town of Bris tol, in the county of Bucks and the State ofI Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useiul Improvement in the Cutting Apparatus of Harvesting-Machines; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, of which- Figure l is a horizontal or top view. Fig. 2 is a posterior vertical view of a section of the beam and other parts of the apparatus. Fig. 3 is a side view of the guard C. Fig. 4 is a side view of the conical-headed 'bolt D used in retaining the cutter to its proper place. Fig. 5 is a posterior vertical view of a section ofthe connecting and reciprocating rod E and the rear end of the cutter and its pin. Fig. 6 is a top view of the cutter F.
The letters of reference marked thereon are the same in all the figures.
The beam is composed of two plates, A and B. The upper plate, A, is countersunk from the under side to receive the conical head of the bolt D. The lower plate, B, is much narrower, and is drilled from top side to receive the steadying-pin oi' the conical bolt D. `By this arrangement much weight of material is dispensed with and a sufficient strength of beam obtained.
The guards C are placed underneath the two plates A and B of the beam, the whole being secured and kept to their places by means of the screw-bolts G.' The guard C, Fig. 3, isA :formed with an upright projection at the rear end, which is equal in height to the thickness of the plate B, whereby a bearing against the plate A is obtained, and the bolt G is much relieved and the firmness of the guard much improved.
The cutter F, Fig. 6, is formed with a square aperture near its center, which takes the square shank of the retaining-bolt D. Near its rear The retaining-bolt D, Fig. 4, is formed with an ordinary screw-nut, s, a square shank, t, a conical head, a, and a round steadying-pin, o, or projection to said head, the whole forming a cheap, effectual, "and durable apparatus.
We are aware that the principle of cutting grass and grain by means of a shear cut is not new.
We are also aware that great difficulty has been experienced in so securing the cutters as to avoid their soon becoming loose and slipping over the tougher portions of the grass. The arrangement described is such that the cutters are kept uniformly to their place in a simple and effectual manner, requiring no'special knowledge on the part of the farmer to keep in order, hence the machine can always be relied on for performing its work.
Vhat we claim as our invention, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is
The bolt D, when formed with a square shank and conical head, whether with or without the steadying-pin at its base, as shown by us in the above, when used in combination with the ringer-bar and cutter, in the manner and for the purpose specified.
