Description
ENTE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE TUPPER, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
RAILROAD-SWITCH.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 30,845, dated December 4, 1860.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE TUrrnR, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Switches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
yIn the annexed figure B and B represent two railway tracks which unite and form the single track C. The course of a car passing down the track B', is represented by the arrow. It passes to the track C, and when returning it follows the track B as shown by the course of the arrow upon that track. Vhere two roads run into one, as in this case, a movable rail is usually used in order to direct the course of the car in the desired direction.
This invention is intended to obviate the difficulty of a moving rail, to give direction to the car. It is also intended to accomplish another object, which is this: to renew that portion of the rail which always receives the shock of the car in turning and which consequently wears very fast.
H, H, represent two snells which are dovetailed as seen into the rails A, A. These snells may be removed, and others placed in their stead when they become worn by the friction of the wheels when they strike them. These snells are placed at the turn in the road, so that they serve to guide the ca'r in the proper direction and in so doing they are very liable to friction and to wear.
D, D, represent short guard rails which are bolted or fastened by screws to the inner rails, A. One point of the guard rail fits snugly in to a V groove in the rail, so that it cannotbe injured or moved out of its proper position. v
These guard rails may be removed at pleasure and turned around or they may have others substituted in their stead when they become worn and broken.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The arrangement of the guards D, D, made reversible, and with one point fitting in a V groove in the rail with the snells H, H, and the rails A, A', the several parts being constructed in the manner and for the purpose herein specified.
Y HORACE TUPPER.
