SHAFT-SUPPORT' FOR VEHICLES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,531, dated February 16, 1886.

Application filed October 26, 1895. Serial No. 160,977.

To all whom it may concer/'71,:

Be it known that I, GEORGE F. STATTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sioux City, in the county of W'oodbury and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaft-Supports; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,clear,

, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, makinga part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view of the front end of a vehicle, showing the application of my improved shaft support; and Fig. 2, a detail view, in perspective, of the support.

The present invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in devices for supporting the shafts, poles, or tongues of Vehicles; and the object thereof is to provide a simple means by which the same can be held up out of the way, and is especially intended to take the place of the usual props now in common use.

The invention consists in a bar of metal or .wood rigid throughout its length and its ends bent inwardly, the upper end having a hook to catch over the dash-board or other part of the vehicle,substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents the support, either of wood, met-al, or other desirable material, and,if preferred, may be covered with cloth, leather, gutta-percha, or other suitable material, as shown at a. or body of the bar. The extremity c terminates in a hook, e, to hook over the dash-board or other portion of the vehicle, while the eX- tremity d is of sufiicient length to pass down back of the lower section of the leaf-spring.

The peculiar bend in the bar constituting the support, as above described, enables it to be used as a positive lock to hold the shafts elevated, and can also be used to hold the tongues or poles ofvehicles. There is no pivoted hook employed to cat-ch under the crossbar of the shait, the device, on the contrary, being composed of a continuous strip or bar, of metal or wood,which is rigid throughout its length, thereby enabling it to be manufactured and placed in the market at a comparatively small cost, it possessing greater durability and strength, there being no joints or pivotal connections to get out of order.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A support for the shafts, tongues, or poles of vehicles, consisting ot' a bar of suitable material rigid throughout its length, said bar bent inwardly at its ends, the lower end from its bent portion having a straight extremity and the upper extremity havinga hook thereon, substantially as and for the purpose specitied.
