Description

(No Model.) J. S. DARE, Sr.
\A/ITNEEEEE: INVENTBR: r yzww I r JZZfMW @fiflf/wd UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
JOHN S. DARE, SR, OF BLOOMINGDALE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ALLEN CONNER, OF SAME PLACE.
HASP-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,394, dated February 16, 1886,
Application filed May 28, i885.
To all whom, it TIMI/y concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN S. DARE, Sr.,a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloom ingdale, in the county of Parke and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hasp-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved hasplock of that class which consists of a hasp 1 pivoted at one end and adapted to engage a staple at the other end.
The objects of my improvement are, first, to cause the hasp to automatically engage the staple in such a manner that it cannot be ac- 1 cidentally withdrawn; and, second, to still further secure the hasp in the staple by looking.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my hasp as applied to a car-door. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of a modification of the hasp.
A is a hasp pivoted to the door at b, and arranged to hook into the staple c, secured in the side of the car. That portion of the hasp which enters the stapleis formed of two parts, one of which, (1, is pivoted to the other at 6, so as to swing laterally thereon and form a latch, which, after passing through the staple, engages the under side thereof by means of a projecting lip, Z, and prevents the withdrawal of the hasp. The upper part of the latch d passes through aguard-plate, f, which limits its movement.
For the purpose of providing means for con veniently handling latch 12, the upper portion is extended to form the thumbpiece 9, the weight of which operates to hold the latch normally closed.
Serial No. 166,936. (No model.)
For the purpose of providing means for securely locking the latch when closed, a stirrup,
h, is formed upon theunder side ofthe thumbpiece, which stirrup passes through the guardplatef, and is secured by apadlock, as shown. 5
In the modification shown in Fig. 2 the thumbpiece is dispensed with, and the latch is held normally outward by a spring, j.
In operation, when the haspis passed into the staple, latch d is pushed to oneside by the staple until lip Z passes below the staple, when the latch swings outward underneath the staple, thus preventing the withdrawal of the hasp till the latch is thrown back by the operator.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, with the hoolcshaped hasp A and the staple c, of the swinging latch d, pivoted to thehook of the hasp and arranged to pass through and engage the under side of the staple, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with a hasp having a guard formed integral with or secured thereto and having a latch pivoted upon the free end thereof, said latch formed with a lip at one end and a stirrup at the other end, of a staple adapted to engage said hasp, whereby, when the parts are in an assembled position, the latch-lip will engage the staple and the stir- 7o rup will project through and below said guard and the parts be secured by a padlock engaging the end of the stirrup, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
