Description
Jan. 2; 19 68 I P. WATTELEZ 3, 0, I
FRAMING ELEMENT FOR MOUNTING PANELS, MORE PARTICULARLY 0F PANES ON A FRAME SUCH AS A DOOR OR WINDOW Filed Nov. 3, 1965 \J n I I v I I United States PatentO ABSTRACT OF THE DISOLOSURE A framing element for mounting panels against a support is formed from an elongated base having a cover hinged to it along one edge. The free edge portion of the cover is spaced from the base to form a slot for receiving the marginal portion of a panel. To hold the cover closed, it and the base are provided with an interlocking longitudinal beading and recess at the inner end of the slot. Between the slot and the hinged edge of the cover the base is provided with a longitudinal groove to receive the heads of fastening members.
A first ob ect of the invention 18 to produce a frammg element for fixing a glazing with great rapidity on a frame such as a door, window or the like.
Another object of the invention is to produce; by means of the framing element, the fitting of a double glazing on a frame provided with a single glazing.
Other objects and advantages will be revealed by the description and claims as well as the attached drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view showing the framing element in the open position for positioning a panel such as a pane of glass.
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view showing the framing element in the closed position holding a panel such as a pane of glass.
FIGURE 3 is a front View of a window element fitted with a double glazing fixed by means of this framing element.
FIGURE 4 is a sectional view of the window element shown in FIGURE 3. 5
FIGURE 5 is a partial sectional view showing an enlargement of the connecting method between the framing element and a window frame.
According to the invention, the framing element 1 for mounting panels, more particularly panes of glass, on a frame is made of natural or synthetic rubber or other material having appreciably the same mechanical characteristics.
The framing element is formed by a base 2 which is fixed on a fiat frame, by screws, nails or clips.
The frame can be that of a door, window, glazed frame or the like.
This framing element forms a fixing means for directly fitting a panel on a frame, but it can also be superimposed on a panel already attached to a frame, for example, to form a double glazing, to make, between two panels or two glazings, a space for an isothermic or isophonic cushion of air.
In the base 2 of the joint a fillister 3 is provided of dimensions according to a suitable design, intended to accommodate the panel or pane of glass of a thickness selected for fixing.
On the fixing base of the framing element there is a securing beading 4 extending lengthwise of the base, with a mushroom-shaped section intended to engage in a longitudinal recess 5 of corresponding shape provided in the cover 6 of the framing element.
The cover 6 is integrally hinged to the base 2, more particularly for assuming two positions, the one, open, enabling a panel or a glazing 7 to be introduced, the other, closed, in which the cover is turned down on the base so that by distortion the recess 5 is penetrated by the securing beading 4, which enables the inner face 6 of the cover to be applied over the edge of the panel or glazing.
A longitudinal groove 8 provided in the base of the framing element between the securing beading and the flexible connection 9 forms a housing for the heads of screws 10, nails, clips or the like.
This groove forms a marking line for rectilinear fitting of fixing means and also marking for the rectilinear fitting of the framing element on the periphery to be framed.
One method of utilization of the framing element is shown in FIGURES 3, 4, 5 in which the framing element is utilized for producing double glazing for a window.
To this end, a pane of glass 7 formed of two elements 11 in the example shown is cut to dimension after fixing the framing element 1 on the window frame.
The panes of glass are inserted in the fillister 3 of the framing element, then the cover 6 is turned down around the flexible connection 9 so as to fit, the recess 5 provided in the cover over the securing beading integral with the base of the sectional element and thereby hold a pane in a slot between the cover and base.
In the case of glass panes or panels of great height or length, an intermediate double beading section 12 is provided for assembling two glass or panel parts situated in the same vertical or horizontal plane.
In the example shown in FIGURE 5, the mounting by means of the framing element 1 of a glazing 11 enables, with an already existing glass pane 13, an airtight partition to be formed, enclosing a cushion of air 14 between the two sheets of glass or panels, forming a heat or soundproof insulation and enabling vibrations set up by shock waves to be absorbed.
Of course, the invention is not restricted to the examples of embodiment described and shown above and from which other methods and forms of embodiment can be devised, without going outside of the scope of the invention for that purpose.
What I claim is:
1. A framing element for mounting panels against a support, said element being made in one piece from elastic material and comprising an elongated base having one side formed to be secured to the support, and a cover for the opposite side of the base hinged along one edge to one edge of the base, the free edge portion of the cover being spaced from the base to form a slot for receiving the marginal portion of a panel, the open end of the slot being at the edge of the base opposite the hinged edge, said base and cover being provided between the edges of the base with a cooperating longitudinal beading and recess, said beading forming the inner end wall of the slot, the beading having a head normally locked in the recess but removable therefrom when the cover is forcibly opened, one side of said slot being opened when the cover is opened for receiving or removing a panel, and said opposite side of the base being provided with a longitudinal area between said slot and said one edge of the base to receive the heads of a line of fasteners for securing the base to a support.
2. A framing element as recited in claim 1, in which said base is provided with said longitudinal beading, said head projects from the opposite sides of the beading, and the cover is provided with said longitudinal recess normally receiving said head, the Walls of the recess projecting under said head to interlock with the beading but 4.
