BILL HOLDER.
Patented Peb. 9. 1886.

JAMES R. FERGUSON AND JOHN FERGUSON, OF CHESTER, CONNECTICUT.
BILL=HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION formng part of Letters Patent No. 335.907, dated February 9, 1886.
Application flled May 20, 1885.
.T0 11% whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES R. Fnneoson and JOHN FERGUSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Chester, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Devioes for Holding Book-Leaves, Papers, Bills, &c.; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, au d exact description of the sar'ne, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this speci fication, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of our invention; Fig. 2, en under side perspective view showing our improvement applied as a paper-file or billholder, and Fig. 3 en edge view thereof.
The present inveution has for its object to provide a spring holding device or clamp that can be usedi'or holding the leaves of books in plaoe; also i'or filing away bills or papers, holding shoe-strings, and other articles in stores, and the various uses to which the ordinary springclip may be applied.
The invention therefore consists in a braoket provided with cams at its ends, and a spring elamp formed of wire and oonnected to the ends of the bracket, and operating in conuec tion with the cams, as will be hereinafter de scrbed.
In the acoompanying drawings, A represents the bracket, and B the clamp formed of springwvire. In the coustruction of this olamp we have shown it formed of a metal tube, as beiug more preferable, but it may be made of other material, and. solid and flat or other shape, as found preferable. When not made hollow, the bracket should have a mor tise or depression at its ends to receive the ends aof the wire clamp B,whereby theclamp is held in engagement with the bracket. Upon the ends of the braoket A are cams b, against whieh the inner side of the elbows 0, or at the point where the ends are bent at right angles, bear. The caxns b will firmly hold the wire clarnp B against the book-leaf, bill, or other artiole placed under t, aud when the clarnp is raised the bent end or elbow c following the incline of the cam aud hearing against it, the ends of the clamp will beforced out laterally, and when released the spring in the wire will cause the clamp to resume its normal position. If preferred, stops d may be formed at the extremity of the cams to Serial Nu. 160,187. (1\'o model.)
prevent the loraoket rom being swung too far back.
In Fig. 1 we have shown the device as adapted to be l'astened against a wall or other stationary object, and in Fig. 2 to be used as a bill or paper file, the invention being applicable to various uses, and either made ornameutal or plain, to snit the taste of the purchasers. lt will be notice'd that the bracket A is swiv eled 01 pivoted to the fastening device O, as shown in Fig. 1, the object thereof being to allow the bra-cket to yield when used for hold iug the leaves down in place. The advantage of tliis is to allow the bracket to adapt itself to the form of the book when all 01 most all of the leaves are on one side. Thus the braaket is capable of securely holding a single leaf as well as the remainder of leaves 011 the op posite side of the book, this being an impor tant feature when our inveution is applied as ahook-leat' holder.
We do not desire to oonfine 011. 1 irwention to any special means of pivoting the braoket, So long as it is capable of a yielding n1otion at either eud it Would come within the scope of our invention, and therefore the means shown is only one in rnany that may be used With advantage.
Hewing now fully desoribed our invention, what we claim as new, and desi re to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A deviee for holding bookleaves, bills, papers, and other artieles, consisting of asuitable bracket adapted to be attached to asuitable support aud having cams at its ends, and a spring-wire elamp with euds bent to engage with the euds of the braoket and operatingiu conneotiou with the cams, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A device or holding book-leaves, bills, papers, aud other articles, consisting of a pivoted bracket having carn ends, in combination with a springwire clamp engaging with the euds of the bracket aud operatiugin connection With the cams substautially as and for the purpose speeified.
In testimouythat we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presenoe of two witnesses.
