Claims priority, application Sweden, Apr. 1, 1964,
2 Claims. (Cl. 287-103) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present jointing device is for joining concrete piles and for this purpose each end of a concrete pile is provided with a fitting of the jointing members so that adjacent ends of a pair of piles can be interlocked.
According to the present invention, the two fitting members are mutually similar and comprise two sections on either side of a plane coinciding with the longitudinal axis of the piles and complementary to each other in such a manner that each one of the said fitting members on one of the pile-ends can be caused to engage the corresponding complementary members of the end of the other pile. Since the two fittings forming the joint are mutually alike, the jointing work can be considerably simplified and great saving effected in the cost of production of the fittings.
According to the present invention, the portions of the fitting designed for interlocking purposes are preferably provided with undercut edges which, upon coupling the two fittings together, are caused to engage each other by the perpendicular sliding engagement of the jointing members in relation to the plane which coincides with the longitudinal axis of the piles.
The jointing members are preferably provided with recesses which, in interlocked condition, are so located that they face each other for the purpose of forming a channel running substantially parallel with the said longitudinal plane and being adapted to accommodate a locking member in the interlocked position of the two jointing sections.
An embodiment of the present invention will be further described below with reference to the attached drawings by way of example, in which:
FIGURE 1 represents an end view of a jointing device according to the present invention;
FIGURE 2 is a cross section in the longitudinal direction of the two piles through a pile joint formed by jointing members according to FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is a cross section through the joint along the line III-III in FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 4 is a smaller scale view in perspective of the end-portions of two concrete piles fitted with jointing members according to the present invention prior to being joined together; and
FIGURE 5 is a partial side elevation of a locking bar designed to lock the jointing sections in interlocked position.
In the embodiment shown in the drawings, the joint fitting shown in FIGURE 1 has the shape of a circular metal plate 1, the diameter of which corresponds substantially to the diameter of the concrete pile 2 for which the fitting is intended. The object of the plate 1 is to have 3,356,393 Patented Dec. 5, 1967 its one flat side aligned with the end of a concrete pile 2 in the manner illustrated in FIGURE 2 and attached to the pile by being welded on to a metal sleeve 3 fixed to the pile-end in known manner. The outward-facing side of the plate 1 not only has a projecting portion 4 which, in the present embodiment has a triangular shape, but also a projecting portion 5 of such a shape that it forms the borders of an open space or recess 6, similar in shape to the portion 4. The two portions 4 and 5 are so disposed on opposite sides of and at a short distance from, a diametrical plane indicated by the line AA in FIGURE 1, that the two halves of the fitting separated by the said plane, have a substantially mutually complementary form, enabling the two end-joint sections of this type to be brought into engagement with each other in such a manner that the projecting portion 4 of one of the two joint fittings is introduced into the recess 6 of the other fitting, and the recessed portion 6 of the first-mentioned fitting is so designed as to accommodate the projecting portion 4 of the other fitting. The triangular portion 4 is provided along two sides with step-like undercut edges 7 and 8, FIG. 3, and the edge portions of projecting portion 5 forming the borders of the recess 6, are undercut at 9 and 10 respectively in a similar manner.
On joining together two piles provided with a jointing device according to the present invention, the two pileends are brought into contact with each other in the manner illustrated in FIGURE 4, so that one of the joint fittings is displaced degrees on the longitudinal axis of the pile in relation to the other joint fitting, thus enabling the projecting portion 4 of each pile-end fitting to slide into the recess 6 of the opposite end fitting. For alignment purposes it is necessary for the longitudinal axes of the piles to be slightly mutually parallel-displaced, so as to enable the undercut edges 7 and 8 of the projecting portion 4 of the fitting to engage the corresponding edges 9 and 10 respectively inside the recesses 6. Relative to each other, the pile-ends are then moved in the direction indicated by the arrow B in FIGURE 4, so that the longitudinal axes of the piles are then in alignment, thus enabling the undercut edge portions 7 and 8 of each jointing portion 4 to engage the corresponding undercut edge portions 9 and 10 respectively of the other jointing portion 5 as shown in FIGURE 2. In the thus interlocked position of the fitting, the intermediate spaces between the portions 4 and 5 of each section of the joint fitting assume the shape of a through channel or groove, and into this channel there is introduced a locking bar 11 for the purpose of fixing the two pile-end fittings in interlocked position.
The present invention is not limited to the embodiment described above and shown in the drawings by way of example. Various details may be modified without deviating from the fundamental principle of the present invention. Thus, for example, instead of the shape of the portion 4 and the corresponding recess 6 taking the form as shown in the drawings, they could equally well take the shape of a semi-circle or a segment, or any other convenient or appropriate shape.
What we claim is:
1. In a jointing device for joining concrete piles, a pair of corresponding plate members, each said plate member being substantially identical in shape and having a first axially projecting portion and a second axially projecting portion spaced from said first portion and terminating in the same plane as said first portion, each said projecting portion having a lateral extension in said plane projecting in the same direction and transverse to the axis of said projecting portion and defining a transverse groove between the main portion of said plate member and its lateral extension, the transverse groove of one said plate being adapted to interlock with said lateral extension of the other said plate member, whereby said plate members may be brought together to mutually interlock, said first axially projecting portions being triangular in shape and said second axially projecting portions being substantially V-shaped so as to complement the shape of said first axially projecting portions.
2. A jointing device according to claim 1, said axially projecting portions being proportioned relative to each 4 diametrally of said plate members when assembled and which space is adapted to receive a locking bar.
