- a corner fastening means to secure the end of a shelf flange against an upright corner post in which an offset element carried by the flange a spaced distance from the ilange end receives a screw through an opening therein for th-readed engagement with the corner post whereby its tightening rigidies the engagement.
- the engagement preferably includes a combination of guide nipples and thread reinforcements on the post for correctly locating the flange end.
- the present invention relates to knockdown steel shelving of the type embodying vertically spaced horizontally disposed rectangular shelves which are releasably secured at their corners to vertical corner posts with a readily and easily secured novel corner fastening means between box llanges on the shelves and the walls of the posts to provide a novel, rugged interfitting relationship of excellent appearance which is of great strength with the interfitting shelves and corner posts drawn hard and rigidly against one another.
- the shelves which are considered are of the type more particularly described in our application, Serial No. 362,150, now U.S. Patent No. 3,276,403 reference to which is hereby made, in which the shelves are lengthwise marginally reniforced by compound flanges of plural thickness.
- the shelves are longitudinally provided with vertically extending marginal full box-type llanges, three walls of which are preferably further rigidilied by the provision of coextensive longitudinally extending ribs therealong with the fourth wall of each box ilange offset upwardly and preferably incorporating a double thickness of sheet metal adjacent to the top of the shelf.
- the corners of the shelves are notched or cut away to expose the ends of the thus ri-gidilied box flanges and the exposed endsA thereof are designed for clamping cooperaiton with the corner posts.
- the corner posts themselves are of four sided box design, preferably with a medial slot through one of the walls. Opposite walls of the posts oppose the ends of the box flanges on the shelves with rib sections die struck therefrom which interfit with the open ends of box flanges.
- the fastening means draws the rib sections hard into and within the open ends of the box flanges with the walls of the corner posts bearing against the end edges of flanges and flan-ge ribs.
- Summary ening bolt which preferably is in the form of a coarse threaded sheet metal screw having a reduced shank portion and a spherically shaped wall on the shank side of the head for engaging the stamping.
- the threaded end is received in a novel guided and canted manner in a hole in the wall of the post between two rib sections.
- Means also are provided for latching the stamping in working position within the slot provided for it in the box flange so that both it and a bolt threaded therein are retained in ready position on the shelf member for all lfuture shelf adjustments. They will not be dislodged thereafter from their ready position to fasten the shelf into position against the various corner posts even though the shelf be moved to different locations along the corner post.

- FIG. l A knockdown steel shelving construction is shown in FIG. l adapted to provide a cabinet 5 having sliding doors 7, between vertically spaced shelves 12, end panels 19 and vertical posts 10 comprising the side legs of an inverted U-shaped channel member more particularly described later.
- FIG. 2 wherein one corner region of a shelving unit constructed according to the present invention has been fragmentarily illustrated, the unit involves in its general organization a series of four posts (FIG. 1) and two or more shelves, one of which has been illustrated and designated in its entirety at 12 (FIG. 2).
- the various corner posts 10 and shelves 12 are -identical in the structural characteristics.
- the shelves 12 and corner posts 10 are rigidly secured together in their operative assembled relationship by means of counterpart fastening devices each of which includes an offset sheet metal stamping 14 and a fastening bolt 16 in the form of a modified elongated sheet metal screw.
- the stamping 14 constitutes a reaction member for assimilating the thrust of the fastening screw which serves to clamp the shelf 12 rigidly to the corner post 10 in a manner that will be described.
- the shelf 12 is generally of rectangular configuration and it includes a horizontal planar shelf top portion 20 having downturned transversely extending marginal flanges 22 and downwardly and longitudinally extending marginal flanges 24.
- the transverse flanges 22 are single thickness flanges and are provided with re-entrant reverse bends (FIG. 3) at their lower edges for reinforcing purposes.
- each flange 24 is box flanges and, as best seen in FIG. 3, each flange includes inside and outside walls 28 and 30 respectively, a bottom wall 32 and a dual thickness top wall 34.
- the walls 28 and 30 are reinforced by spaced apart reinforcing ribs 36, while the bottom wall 32 is reinforced by a single central rib 38.
- the upper edge region of the box flange 24 projects a slight distance above the horizontal plane of the planar body portion 20 of the shelf 12 by reason of a vertical connecting flange 40 between the body portion and top wall 34, the flange 40 constituting a marginalrestraining flange to prevent supported objects from rolling or sliding from the upper surface of the shelf and as shown herein has a wood finish plastic sheet finishing surface 41 adhered thereto.
- the four ribs 36 are inwardly rolled ribs while the rib 38 in the bottom wall 32 is an outwardly rolled rib.
- the four corners of the shelf 12 are notched or cut-away as indicated at 42 (FIG. 3) for reception of selected regions of the corner posts therein in a manner that will be described, and adjacent to the posts the inner wall 28 of the box flange is apertured as at 18 to receive the stamping 14.
- Each post is of rolled sheet metal construction, preferably of a heavier gauge metal than that of the shelf 12 and comprises a main body tubular-type member having parallel side walls 50 and 52, a front wall 54 and a longitudinal slot 58 between two halves 60 of the rear wall.
- the side walls have vertically spaced rib sections providing nipples or rib sections 62 and a dimple 64 between them having a keyhole perforation 66 therethrough whose minor diameter is the root diameter of the bolt 16 with the major dimension being said root diameter plus the height of the thread 17 on one side of the bolt.
- the nipples 62 serve a three-fold purpose, viz. to interengage with the end of the box flange 24; to guide the bolt 16 into proper engagement with the perforation 66; and to reinforce the side wall 50 against the strain of the screw 16.
- the axis of the screw in its secured position is at an acute angle from perpendicular to the s-ide wall 50 that is equal to the lead of the screw thread 17, and the key portion 67 of the keyhole is disposed vertically in the side wall where a thread 17a of the screw has its greatest angle with respect to the side wall 50 so that the diametrically opposite thread portion 17b is parallel to the face of the side wall 5) so that the screw is guided and supported in a predetermined angular canted relationship that supports and stabilizes the box flange 24 perpendicularly to the side wall 50 when tightened in place.
- the U-shaped channel members forming the posts are identical with the key portions 67 arranged in the same direction thereon so that when bent to the U-shape shown the keyhole portions 67 arc up in the right front post portion and down in the right rear portion and vice versa in the left hand channel member to assure the thread and bolt cant described that is desired for each corner of the shelf. This reduces to unity the inventory required for posts as well as unity of inventory for shelves, side panels, and other elements described.
- Each vertical corner post 10 is adapted to seat within a corner notch 42 with the side 50 of the post opposing and bearing against the adjacent open end or rim of the box flange 24 as best seen in FIGS. 2 and 3 in squared relation.
- the stamping 14 is of sheet metal construction and, as shown in FIGS. 6 and 7, is in the form of a stamping having a flat generally rectangular body 74 provided with a rectangular flat flange 76 which rests against the inner face of the box flange wall 28 around the aperture 18 therein.
- the central portion of the stamping is offset into the interior of the box flange in the form of a concave chute 78 ending in a wall 30 having an aperture 82 that is disposed normal to the side of the chute 78.
- the aperture is elongated to receive the thread 17 of the screw 16 freely therethrough.
- the stamping is cut and offset towards the box flange to form a finger tab S4 that snaps into place in the recess opening 18 with an interlocking relationship with the end edges thereof.
- the other end of the chute can also be notched and offset, but preferably is die struck to provide a groove 86 next to the flange 78 to engage over the edge of the abutting end of the aperture 1S.
- the offset 78 is moved into the aperture 18 with an endwise movement until the finger tab 84 passes into cooperating engagement with the edge of the aperture 18, whereupon the other end of the stamping is pressed into place with the cant of thread wall camming the groove 86 into engagement with the opposite edge of the aperture 18. Thereafter the stamping may not be removed from its installed position and the shelf 12 may be handled without danger of the stamping, and screw therein, falling from its installed position preparatory to securing the shelf in place.
- the shank of the screw 16 is free of threads for a distance approximately equal to the working length of the full size threads 17 that extends into the post 10 whereby upon loosening the screw it is free to slide back through the opening 82 enough to clear the post face 50.
- the proper hole 66 in the corner post 10 is then selected for the desired shelf elevation and the fastening screw 16 is started through this hole to make threaded engagement with the post. Tightening of the screw with the aid of a suitable tool such as a screwdriver, will bring the rib sections 62 of the corner post into register and engagement with the open end of the box flange 24, and upon final tightening of the fastening screw 16 the screw angle, the rib sections 62 and the dimple 64 will orient at the correct angle without danger of slippage or twisting and the end of the box flange 24 will be supported rigidly and solidly against the side face 50 of the post 10 against shelf sway.
- a suitable tool such as a screwdriver
- the end panel for the shelving is shown lat 19 with its front and back edges received in the slots 58.
- the panel is marginally notched at 90 to coincide with the pointed ends of the screws 16 to hold the panel in place.
- it is first slipped into place in the slots 58 before the screws 16 are tightened down, after which the ends of the screws will enter the notches and prevent disassembly.
- the head of the yfastening screw 16 may be observed when the shelving is viewed from below and then only at the rear posts, such viewing of the shelving is seldom made when the shelving is put to use. Therefore the fastening is substantially concealed from view, yet if correction -or change of a shelf is desired ⁇ brief inspection indicates how it is to be readily accomplished.
