Description

ATTORNEY.
(No Modem UNITED STATES. PATENT OEEicE.
ALBIN I). YARN ALL, OF EAGLE STATION, PENNSYLVANIA.
CONVERTIBLE CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 335,410, dated February 2, 1886.
Application filed November 19,1834. Serial No. 148,277.
.To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, ALBIN P. YARNALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eagle Station, county of Chester, tate of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Folding Ironing Board and Chair, which improvement isfully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a central longitudinal section of a combined folding iron-board and chair embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents asimilar view of the same device shown in Fig. 1, the parts being folded. Fig. 3 repv resents a rear elevation, the parts being in position shown in Fig. l. Fig. 4 represents va rear elevation, the parts being in position shown in Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention relates to improvements in combined ironing-boards and chairs; and it consists of novel means whereby an ironingboard and chair may be combined, so that parts of each may be utilized as parts of the other; also in providing folding devices whereby, when the chair is to be used, the other portions of the device may be made to occupy less room, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents an ironing-board consisting of two sections, a and b, of unequal length, the latter being the longer, the sections being hinged together, so as to fold, bringing the upper faces thereof in con tact. The inner end of section b of the board A is pivotally connected on its under side with a cross-piece, B, by means ofa guide, C, fastened to said crosspiece and passing through openings or slots c, formed by pieces D, suitably secured to the board A, between the under side of section b and the said pieces, and the said pivotal fastening is such as to permit the board A, when the outer end is lowered and pushed inward, to assume a ver tical position, or one nearly so.
E represents a frame, consisting of two uprights, d, each formed in halves or sections pivotally connected, the upper and lower parts, respectively, connected by cross-pieces e. Near the outer end of section b of the ironing-board, and on the under side, is a spring-catch, f, and
(No model.)
on the saine side, at equal distances from the end of the board, are two hooks, g, which engage with a horizontal rod, h, attached to the upper cross-piece c, so as to form a hinge-corr nection therewith. To the lower cross-piece e is pivotally secured a hinged orjointed bar, F, having a band, j, thereon. The other end of the said bar F is pivotally secured to'a brace, k, of the chair. The outer end of the bar F is rounded on its under surface, and the inner end thereof on its upper surface, so that it may move freely on its pivotal connections.
Grepresents a hinged brace-bar attached to the back part, Z, of a chair-boX, K.
H represents a sectional brace-bar, pivotall y connected with both the under side of section Z1 and the part Zof the chair seat or box.
J represents the uprights or legs of the chair. The rear pair of the said uprights extend above the box K, and are connected at their upper end by the cross-piece B. These uprights sustain a box or frame, K, secured thereto, the upper portion, m, of which constitutes the seat of the chair. The seat m is in two sections hinged together, the front portion forming a lid for the box K. In the front edge of the lid is a sinallopening, which is filled by ablock, n, when the device is folded and used as a chair.
. The said block a is fastened to a slotted bar,
L, which is secured to the inner side of the front portion of the box K by a pin or stud, p, working in the slot thereof. Thelower end of the said bar L is rounded, and the upper end has a tenon, o, for insertion in a hole, o', in the under side of section c of the ironing board, for the purpose of steadying and supporting the said board when the device is extended.
M represents a block, having an upward iiange, q, the said block and iange serving as a support and brace for the bar L when the said bar is raised.
N represents the cliair-bacl,l iavin g a hinged portion or upper part, i', so connected as to fold against the front portion of the lower part thereof when the ironing-board is extended; but when the chair is to be used the said part 1' is raised, and in connection with the lower part presents an even-faced chairback. The said part r has suitable strengthening-pieces, s, around its border, which are IOO so placed that when it is raised the side pieces form extensions of the back uprights, J. Suitable fastenings, as t, are provided to hold said part r in a raised position.
On the rear side of the cross piece B are recesses u, which permit the entrance therein of the pieces D when the device is folded.
The manner of operating the device is simple. When it is desired to change it from a folded condition, or as a chair,to an extended or ironing-board condition, the upper portion,r, of the chair-back is unfastened and turned down, the lower end of section b is raised, and the entire board moved backward on the crosspiece B, said movement straightening the brace-bar H. The frame E is now drawn out, and at the same time, owing to its connection with the frame E, the bar F is straightened. The band j. is then drawn over the connected end portions ofthe sections of the said bar F. The brace-bar G is also straightened by the same movement of the frame E. The box K is then opened and the bar L slid on the pin p until the said pin is in the lower portion of the said slot, when the outer end of the bar is raised and the tenon o inserted in the hole o of the section a of the board A, which is unfolded or raised from section b. The deyice is now in condition for useA as an ironingboard.
When it is desired to close or fold the device so that it may be employed as a chair, the part a is folded on section b of the board, and the slotted bar L lowered and slid into the boX K. The bandj is then slipped off the connected ends of the sections of bar F and placed on the inner section, so as to be out of the way of the outer section thereof when the said bar F is doubled in the act of lowering the end of the board b. The outer end of the board b is lowered and at the same time moved inward, thereby doubling the sections of the uprights d on each other, the same movement also doubling the sections of the brace-bars G and H. Vhen folded, the parts E, F, G, and H will lie within the two planes of the front and back faces of the back uprights, J, of the chair. The device is now ready for use as a chair. Havlng thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A combined ironing board and chair having a folding board composed of two sections hinged together and pivotally secured to the back uprights of the chair, and provided with means, consisting of bars pivotally connected together and with the end of the said board, for supporting the same, substantiall as described. I
2. A combined ironing board and chair having a folding board composed of two sections, one of which has a detachable support, substantially as described, while the other section has a support composed of bars pivotally connected together and to the said section, substantially as described.
3. In a combined ironing-board and chair,
the folding board A, composed of sections a and b hinged together, in combination with the frame E, pivotally secured to the outer end of said section b, bars F, and braces G and H, and back uprights, J, having cross piece B, the said section b having secured thereto the pieces D, and the cross-piece B, having guide C, substantially as described.
4. In a combined ironing-board and chair, the folding board A, in combination with the cross-piece B, the guide C, and pieces D, substantially as described.
5. 'Ihe folding board composed of sections a and b, the latter having pieces D, in combination with back nprights, J, having crosspiece B and guide C, seat K, and slotted bar L, having block a, the said bar L being pivotally secured to said seat K, substantially as described.
6. A chair having its back uprights, J, provided with the back N, having the hinged portion 1", with border strengthening pieces s, said pieces forming a continuation of said uprights, and the folding board A, pivotally secured to the cross-piece B, secured to said uprights, said parts being combined substantially as described.
ALBIN P. YARNALL.
