J. LEMMAN.
REVERSIBLE CAR SEAT.
Patented Jan. 26, 1886.
WITNESSES INYENTOR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN LEMMAN, OF WAKEFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
REVERSIBLE CAR-S EAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,957, dated January 26, 1886.
Application filed August 10, 1885. Serial No. 173,974. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN LEMMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wakefield, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reversible Car-Seats;
. and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to that type of carsettees in which the reversible back is so combined with the seat that the latter is tilted back a little in either position of the back.
Myimprovement consists in suspending the seat from crank-pins on the striker-arms of the back by standards rigidly secured to the seat, and governing the movement and adj ustment of theseat by fixed guide-pins and guides therefor.
In order that my invention may be clearly understood, I have illustrated in the annexed drawing, and will proceed to describe a practical form thereof.
In the annexed drawing, which represents a cross-section of a car settee embodying my invention, A refers to one of the end frames of a car-settee, O to one of the striker-arms of the reversible back B, and D to the tiltingseat. The back is pivoted in the usual manner to the end frames ata by its striker-arms, which lie on one or the other of the rests a a to support the back.
The seatis provided at each end witha fixed standard, E, the upper end of which is pivoted to a crank-pin, c, on the adjacent striker-arm. In order that the seat thus suspended from the crank-pins of the striker-arms may be tilted and held in a tilted position, I provide each end frame, about vertically below the pivotal point a of the striker-arm,\vith a fixed guidepin, E. which projects into a vertical guide slot shown as formed in a clip, (1, secured to the end bar of the seat, but which guide-slot maybe formed in the end bar of the seat itself.v
The guide-pins and upper ends of the guideslots are so located relatively to each other and to the crank-pins on the striker-arms that the upper ends of said guide slots will become seated against the guide-pins a little before the striker-arms strike rests a in reversing the back, so that during the latter portion of such reversal the seat will be turned on said guide-pins and tilted. The end frames may be provided with fixed stops a a", below the seat, so located that the tilted-down side of the seat may find a rest on such stops.
It is obvious that by making the guide-pins adjustable the degree of inclination of the seat may bechanged to suit by proper adjustment of such guidepins. It is obvious, also, that any suitable form of guides and guide-pins other than those shown and described may be used, and that their positions may be reversed.
I claim as my invention- The combination, substantially as before set forth, of the reversible back, the striker-arms of which are provided with crank-pins, the seat suspended from said crank-pins by standards rigidly secured to such seat, the guidepins, and the guides for said guide-pins.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN LEMMAN.
