No. 542,285 Claims. (Cl. 312-208) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A carrying case base has two upreaching side walls to mask portions of the sides of the typewriter permanently. Between said side walls in front of the carriage extends a top shroud. Furthermore, a carrying case cover is removably associable upon the base side walls tocomplete with the base a typewriter carrying case. A carrying case handle projects from one of the side walls for carrying the machine by its base and the base preferably has a paper storing drawer which is adapted to be held in closed position by the carrying case cover.

The present invention relates to a carrying case for a portable typewriter comprising a base secured to said typewriter and integral with the walls of the case, and a cover for covering said typewriter to be carried out, said cover being detachably connected to a pair of opposite walls of said case.

In the known carrying cases of the above type the handle is normally secured to the cover, whereby in the case this latter is accidentally removed from the machine when carried out, the machine is subject to damage.

This disadvantage is obviated by the carrying case according to the invention, which is characterized in that a handle is secured to another one of said walls, whereby the machine is always secured to the handle.

This and other characteristics of the invention will become apparent from the followingdescription of a preferred embodiment, made by way of example and not in a limiting sense, and from the accompanying drawings, wherein:

FIG. 1 is a partial sectional top view of a portable typewriter provided with a carrying case according to the invention;

FIG. 2 is a right hand longitudinal partial sectional view of the typewriter of FIG. 1;

FIG. 3 is a partial sectional front view of the carrying case.

With reference to FIG. 1, the carrying case comprises a base, generically indicated by 3, and formed of a bottom plate or wall 6 integral with two

side walls

7 and 8, a rear wall 9 and a front wall 11, said side walls permanently mask at least partially the sides of the typewriter. The typewriter comprises a pair of side frames 12 (FIG. 2) secured to a plate 13 in turn secured to a pair of suitable depressions 14 of the bottom plate 6, in a manner known per se. Therefore, the typewriter is secured to the base 3.

7 and 8 are provided each one with a vertical projection 16 having a hole adapted to be engaged by a nose 17 of a top portion or shroud 18 of the case. A front part 20 of the top portion 18 is adapted to be forced against a surface 19 of the front wall 11, whereby the top portion 18 is detachably connected to the base 3. Furthermore secured to the right wall 7 (FIG. 1) is a rigid handle 21 for carrying out the typewriter as well as for displacing same on the table. The left wall 18 is provided with the conventional support feet 22 of the case.

Furthermore, the carrying case comprises a cover 4 for covering the typewriter to be carried out, said cover "ice being detachably connected to a pair of

7 and 8 of the case. More particularly, a rear position 30 of the cover 4 is provided with a pair of noses 32 adapted to engage each one a corresponding notch 33 of the rear wall 9, while a front portion or a flange 34 (FIG. 3) engages a forward recess 36 ('FIG. 1) of the front wall 11 of the case. Furthermore, the cover 4 abuts a shoulder 29 of the rear wall 9 and two shoulders or ledges 31 (FIGS. 1 and 2) of the

The base 3 is provided with an aperture 23 (FIG. 2), providing a pocket located between the plate 13 and the bottom plate 6 thereof and adapted to house a paper storing drawer 24 which is slidable forwards. Secured to the side portions of the drawer 24 are two pins 25 pivotally mounting a paper pressing member or plate 26 normally urged by a spring28 to press the paper sheets 27 into the drawer 24, thus preventing the sheet 27 from being damaged when the drawer 24 is drawn out. The drawer is also adapted to be completely drawn out from the aperture 23. Then the plate 26 may be located in a position substantially vertical, whereby it may be used as a copy holder for the draft of the work to be typed.

Integral with the forward end of the drawer 24 is a projection 38 (FIG. 3) adapted to be engaged by a pair of yieldable projections 37 provided on the flange 34 of the cover 4. When the cover 4 is forced down the projections 37 lock the drawer into the base 3.

It is intended that many changes, improvements and additions of parts may be made to the described case without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.

What I claim is:

1. In combination with a portable typewriter having a platen carriage,

-(a) carrying case base having a typewriter mounted thereon, said carrying case base comprising,

(a1) a bottom wall (a2) two opposite side walls upreaching from the bottom wall to mask permanently at least partially the sides of the typewriter, (a3) and a shallow upreaching rear wall,

(b) a top shroud at the front of the carriage cooperative with the side walls of said carrying case base to shroud the typewriter at the top in front of the carriage,

(c) a carrying case cover removably associable with said base upon its side walls and said rear wall,

(d) and a carrying handle for said carrying case projecting from one of said side walls of said carrying case base and whereby said typewriter is adapted to be carried by its carrying case base.

2. The combination set forth in claim 1,

(e) the carrying case base including a wall spaced above the said bottom wall and providing a rectangular pocket above the latter,

(f) a paper storing drawer slidably accommodated in said pocket,

(g) and at least one yieldable element integral with said carrying case cover and adapted by cooperation with said drawer to detent said cover in place on the base and concomitantly to hold the drawer in closed position.

The combination set forth in claim 2, said bottom wall of the base having a front extremity about one third to the rear of the front end of the carrying case cover, said paper storing drawer having a bottom wall sloping upwardly and forwardly from the front extremity of said bottom wall to form an upwardly and forwardly sloping continuation thereof.

4. In combination with a portable typewriter having a platen carriage,

(a) a carrying case base having a typewriter mounted thereon, said carrying case base comprising,

(a1) a bottom wall,

(a2) two opposite side walls upreaching from said bottom wall at the front of the carriage to a height substantially even with the top of the carriage and upreaching below the carriage to a lesser height, such wall permanently masking at leastvpartially the sides of the typewriter,

(a3) a shallow rear wall complementing said side walls below the carriage,

(b) .a removable shroud at the front of the carriage fitting down on said side walls and leaving a projecting ledge at each side and the front of the base,

(0) a carrying case cover removably associable with said base upon said rear Wall and the said projecting ledges,

(d) and means to detent said cover in place upon said base.

5. The combination set forth in claim 4, the carrying case base having a handle extending laterally from one 5 of said side walls of the base, whereby. said typewriter is adapted to be carried by its base.

Claims

1. IN COMBINATION WITH A PROTABLE TYPEWRITER HAVING A PLATEN CARRIAGE, (A) CARRYING CASE BASE HAVING A TYPEWRITER MOUNTED THEREON, SAID CARRYING CASE BASE COMPRISING, (A1) A BOTTOM WALL (A2) TWO OPPOSITE SIDE WALLS UPREACHING FROM THE BOTTOM WALL TO MASK PERMANENTLY AT LEAST PARTIALLY THE SIDES OF THE TYPEWRITER, (A3) AND A SHALLOW UPREACHING REAR WALL, (B) A TOP SHROUD AT THE FRONT OF THE CARRIAGE COOPERATIVE WITH THE SIDE WALLS OF SAID CARRYING CASE BASE TO SHROUD THE TYPEWRITER AT THE TOP IN FRONT OF THE CARRIAGE, (C) A CARRYING CASE COVER REMOVABLY ASSOCIABLE WITH SAID BASE UPON ITS SIDE WALLS AND SAID REAR WALL, (D) AND A CARRYING HANDLE FOR SAID CARRYING CASE PROJECTING FROM ONE OF SAID WALLS OF SAID CARRYING CASE BASE AND WHEREBY SAID TYPEWRITER IS ADAPTED TO BE CARRIED BY ITS CARRYING CASE BASE.
