2' Claims.
This invention relates to carrying cases for portable typewriters, and more particularly to an improved stationery holding device ,for suchcarrying cases. 1
An object of the present invention is to provide a carrying case for portable typewriters having a stationery holding device therein which is very simple in construction and yet highly effective in use, and which does not require'the dimensions of the carrying case to be enlarged nor add materially to the manufacturing cost thereof.
A further and more specific object .of the present invention is to provide a carrying case for a portable typewriter having base and cover sections with a stationerysupporting member adapted to normally occupy an unused-portion within the carrying case when closed upon thetypewriter, and arranged to move from this position to a position afiording access to the stationery carried by this supporting member when the cover section is opened or removed from thebase section.
Other objects, purposes and characteristic features of the present invention will appear as the description thereof progresses, during which references will be made to the accompanying draw- 1 ranged in accordancewith the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a side sectional view taken through the cover section, base section and the stationery holding device of the present carrying case.
Fig, '3 is a fragmentary sectional view of a detent arrangement which maybe used with the present stationery holding device, the section being taken on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is another fragmentary sectional view taken on line 4-4! of Fig. 2 and showing a method of pivotally mounting the present stationery holding device within the cover section of thecarrying case.
The carrying case illustrated in the present drawings is of a two-section construction, 'one section being a base 5 having a shallow depression 6 ."for receiving the lower portion of a portable typewriting machine. The outline of a portable typewriting machine T is illustrated in Fig. 2 by dot and 'dash lines, and the usual mechanism 'may be provided for detachably securing this machine in its illustrated position on the base section 5.
The other section of the carrying case is in the form of -a cover having a top wall 1, front Wall 8, rear wall 9 and side walls 10. All of these Walls are permanently united to form -a box-like cover with a lower edge fitting :upon the upper edge of the base section 5 to entirely enclose the typewriting machine T. 1 w I 1 The cover section is pivotally and detachably secured at its rear "portion to the rear portion of the base section 5 by hinge straps 12 secured in spaced relation at the lower edge of the rear cover wall 9, and these straps have pointedpivot pins l3 rigidly secured thereto which are adapted to enter companion cylindrical openings in hinge straps 14 secured in spaced relationship at the rear portion of the base section 5 as shown" in Fig. 2. These hingemcmbers l2, l3xand serve to retain the rear portion of the cover section in position relative to the rear portion of the base section 5 as shown in Fig. 2, andpermit the cover section to be moved upwardly .and rearwardly relative to the=base section and in such position the cover section may-be moved laterallyto separate pins l3 from the hinge straps l4 and per-' mit the cover section to be entirely removed as shown in Fig. 1. i
When the cover section -isclosed upon the base section, the front portions ofthese two sections may be locked together by any suitable means such as the usual two-part locking latch'mech anism illustrated in Fig; 2 which'comprises a lockable latch mechanism 16' mounted at the front of the base section '5 to cooperate with companion latching mechanism 11 mounted at the lower edge of the frontwall '8 of the cover section. With the cover section thus latched in place upon the base section, the-case may be carried in an upright position with therear portion of the typewriting machine T downward, and a suitable handle is maybe securedat the central portion of the front wa1l-8 of the cover section.
The stationary holding device of the present invention is arranged to occupy' a space within the cover section which is not. occupied by the typewritingmachine Twhen the coversecti'on is closed upon the base section, and this stationery holding device is mounted within the cover section for movement from this position toa position wherein the stationery held thereby isreadily accessible when the cover'section-isopened and removed, The illustrated form-of this stationery holding device comprises a supporting member S which may be formed of a sheet of rigid material such as fiber or metal and extends between the sides of the cover section and is normally disposedabove the keyboard. of the typewriter T and between the front end of the line space lever and the front wall 8 of the cover section.
The supporting member S is provided with straight end portions 20 and 2| separated by a curved portion 22. When the supporting member S is in normal position as shown in full lines in Fig. 2, the portion 20 extends substantially parallel with the top wall I of the cover section, and the portion 2| is substantially parallel with the front wall 8 of. the cover section. The side edges of supporting member S including straight portions 20 and 2| and curved portion 22 are provided with flange portions 24 which in the illustrated form are of a hollow construction witha substantially rectangular cross sectionas shown in Fig. 3, but it may be found preferable to make these flange portions of a suitable solid material such as plywood.
A pocket is formed at the rearward end of stationary supporting member S by an upright cross member 26 joined to the rear edge of the straight section 20 and a-top strip 21 which is joinedto the upper edge of strip 26 and extends above and parallel with the rear straight portion 20 of the supporting member. A similar pocket is formed at the front end of stationary supporting member S by a strip 30 joined to the lower edge of the straight portion 2| and a strip 3i which is joined to the front edge of strip 33 and extendsupwardly therefrom in spaced parallel relation to the straight section 2 I. The strips 2'! and 3i may be joined or integral with the top edge portions of the flange portions 24 as shown inFig.'1.
This supporting member S with the pockets at each end thereof provides a means for holding sheets of paper P with the ends thereof resting in the lower pocket and the other ends in the rearward pocket so that the intermediate portions of the sheets extend over and are supported by the curved portion 22 of the supporting member. be provided in the front pocket between the sheets of paper P and the front strip 3|.
When the cover section is closed upon the base section as shown in-Fig. 2, the stationery supporting means just described is disposed above the keyboard of the typewriting machine T in the space which is not otherwise occupied by any part'of the machine. In this position, the stationer P and E is not readily accessible and means are provided in accordance with the present invention for mountin this stationery holding structure within the cover section for movement from this position to a position shown in Fig. 1 or in dotted lines in Fig. 2 when the cover section is opened or removed from the base section to afford convenient access to the stationery.
The stationery holding structure is pivotally mounted at the rear end portion thereof to the upper central portion of the cover section by side'extensions 35 having openings receiving pivot pins 36 suitably secured to the side walls ll] of the cover section. The rear end of the stationery holding structure is thus supported by the extensions '35 and pivot pins 36, and means are provided for normally holding the front end of this structure against displacement from normal position shown in Fig. 2 when the cover section is closed. This means is shown in Fig. 3 in the form of a detent arrangement acting on the sides of flange portions 24 and each of these detent devices comprises a cup-shaped member 38 pressed intoan opening in the companion side wall It)! and carrying a spring 39 arranged to press a detent ball 40 outwardly toward a retaining rim around the edge of cup 38. Each of Inaddition, a supply of envelopes E may iii ; assembly.
When it is desired to use the typewriting machine T, the cover section may be moved upwardly and rearwardly about the pivot pin l3 and completely removed therefrom if desired as shown in Fig. 1. In this position, the stationery holding structure may be forcibly moved from its normal position against the action of the detent means and swung about the pivot pins 36 to its position shown in Fig. 1 wherein the lower strip 30 rests against the inner edge of the rear wall 9 of the cover section. This position of the stationery holding structure afiords access to the supporting member and pockets for convenient insertion or removal of the paper P and envelopes E. When it is desired to replace the cover section, the stationery holding structure is moved about the pivots 36 to its position shown in Fig. 2 wherein it is retained by the detent devices, thus permitting the cover to be replaced upon the base section 5With01li', interference with any part of the typewriting machine.
-A carrying case for portable typewriters has thus been provided having a very simple and yet highly effective stationery holding arrangement mounted therein. It will be clear that this stationery holding arrangement normally occupies a position within the carrying case which is not required for any other purpose and is movable therefrom when the cover section is opened to a position affording convenient access thereto. The arrangement for holding the stationery in the form of papers and envelopes or the like is of a Very simple construction which may be easily manufactured at a very low cost and Which does not add to the dimensions of the carrying case and adds a, minimum of weight to the combined The stationery holding structure as described provides a pocket of sufficient length from cross member 23 to strip an for receiving the conventional commercial letter size sheets, usually 8 x 11 inches, in the manner shown in Fig. 2. Letter size sheets are not adapted to housing in the usual size of portable typewriter case because they are substantially the size of the length and width of the cover and therefore too large. As a result there is insuflicient space in a holder for letter size stationery in the usual portable typewriter case without folding or creasing the sheets and without increasing the size of the cover dimensions of the case both vertically and horizontally. The present structure therefore merely bends the letter size sheets about curved portion 22 and provides adequate storage space for such sheets in the unused front top portion of the cover without increasing its size and without creasing or folding the sheets.
It is to be understood that various changes may be made in the specific construction illustrated and described, and certain parts thereof may be employed without others, without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the accompanying claims.
