Description

UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE,
MARY H. BERRY AND FRANK H. BUTLER, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
OINTMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,634, dated January 19, 1886.
Application filed June 27, 1885. Serial No. 170,027. (No specimens.)
- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MARY HANNAH BERRY and FRANK H. BUTLER, residents of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented a new and useful Oint' ment for Treating Ulcers; and we hereby declare that the agents used in our compound, together with a full and clear description of the manner of making and using the same in the method best known to us, are given in the following specification.
Our invention relates to the combination of the various agents specified in our formula in such proportions as to produce an ointment suitable for the treatment of ulcerated sores, cutaneous eruptions, and abrasions. To effect this object, we employ the following formula in compounding eight and one-eighth ounces of the ointment: olive-oil, four (4) ounces; oil of turpentine, half(l) an ounce; pure bees- WaX,one (1) ounce; pure Burgundy pitch, half (i) an ounce; rosin, one (1) ounce; pure extract of'tobacco, one-eighth (t) of an ounce; pure extract of oX-gall, one (1) ounce.
In compounding our ointmentlet us say to the amount of eight and one-eighth ounces, or any greater or less amount, according to the ratio given in our formula-we adopt the following method: Vi e employ a suitable utensil and place it in a bath of hot water over a slow fire, and, putting in the olive-oil, add the oil of turpentine, the pure Burgundy pitch, and
rosin, and the beeswax cut into small pieces,
and stir the mass until it is incorporated, after which the oX-gall and extract of tobacco are added, and the whole mass is then well stirred. When the compound is completed and ready for use, it forms an unctuous mass, and will remain in that condition in an ordinary temperature.
In using our ointment for the treatment of a superficial ulcer it is spread upon linen and then applied, and in the same manner for a serious abrasion of the skin.
In treating common cutaneous eruptions the ointment is simply rubbed on the parts affected.
\Ve are aware that basilicon ointment is Well known, and that an ointment formed of resin, beeswax, lard, and tobacco is also old, and we do not claim such.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An ointment for the treatment and cure of ulcers, cutaneous eruptions, and abrasions, consisting of olive-oil, oil of turpentine, beeswax, Burgundy pitch, rosin, and pure extract oftobacco and ox galhin the proportions specified.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto 'set our hands and seals.
