Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREEMAN A. HURD, OF RED BANK, NEW JERSEY.
COMPOSITION FOR DRESSING LEATHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 545,505, dated September 3, 1895- Application and April 3, 1894. serial No.506,2l2. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREEMAN A. HURD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Red Bank, in the county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Compound for Harness or Leather Dressing; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a novel combination of ingredients, hereinafter set forth, forming a paste and designed to be used on harness or leather for the purpose of rendering said leather waterproof, as well as causing the same to be pliable, and preserving said leather; and the same is equally as applicable to new as well as old leather, causing an excellent flexibility to the same.
My composition consists of the following ingredients, combined in or about the propertions stated-via,paraffine,thirty-six pounds; lampblack, nine and one-half ounces; oleic acid, thirty pounds; petroleum, thirty-three pounds.
In preparing the above combination of ingredients the parafine is first melted in a suitable vessel over a gentle fire, after which the lampblack is added thereto and the two ingredients are thoroughly mixed. The oleic acid is then added and Well mixed with the other ingredients. Finally, the petroleum is added thereto, and the whole is well mixed by agitation.
This dressing being in the form of paste can be applied by the hands to the leather without injury thereto, and will be found an excellent salve for healing cuts or sores, as well as growing the hair rapidly on an animal simply by the person rubbing it well in, and it is suitable for application to any kind of leather 'where flexibility is desired, or a waterproof articlesuch' as hand leather satchels, trunks, or boots.
In using the above composition the-leather should be Well cleaned from dust or dirt and the paste applied, when the leather is dry, and well rubbed in.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein described composition of matter for softening and rendering leather waterproof consisting of paraffine lamp black, oleic acid, and petroleum, combined and in about the proportions specified.
In testimony whereof I afifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FREEMAN A. HURD.
