SPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,506, dated January 19, 1886.

Application filed November 21, 1885. Serial No. 183,490. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern: I

Be it known that 1, ROBERT W. BETTS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Montclair, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in boxes, and more particularly to an improvement in boxes known to the trade as tuck boxes, the object being to construct a vessel or receptacle of this character which shall be adapted to contain cereals or coarse-grain ma terials, and which shall be capable of being easily and readily folded, and when in its closed or folded adjustment to form a neat, compact, and strong article; and with such ends in View my invention consists in certain novel features of construction, as willbe hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

In Patent No. 327,224, granted to me on the 29th day of September, 1885, l have shown and described a box constructed on the same principle for the purpose of containing fine powder or pulverized material; but in mypresent application I seek to cover a box more especially adapted to contain coarser material, and wherein it is not necessary to form the joints as perfect as those for containing finelypulverized materials-snch as starch, &c. the advantage existing in the present construction of box used for this purpose over that above mentioned being that it can be more easily and readily folded, and the ends secured tightly and neatly without the aid of any adhesive substance, and at the same time so formed that there is no danger of its contents escaping; and, further, that by folding the ends of the box as hereinafter described the body is rendered stronger and more rigid and less liable to yield to any lateral strain.

Figure 1 represents a portion of my improved box in elevation in its open adjustment. Fig. 2 is a similar view in its partlyfolded adjustment. Fig. 3 is a view thereof in longitudinal section.

A represents the body of a box constructed of any suitable material and dimensions, and

formed on two opposite sides with the flaps or ends B O, which, when properly folded, extend from one side of the box to the other. The sides of the box adjacent, to the ends B C are constructed as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and adapted to fold on the lines a b, a c, d c, b c, and h c, forming the side or curbf, the smaller side, 6, and a still smaller side, 9, the said side 6 commencing about onequarter of the length of the end B from the top there of, and the latter side, g, extending up about one-quarter of the length of the side 0.

When it is desired to fold the box, the sides f thereof are first bent inwardly on the lines a b, b a, and d c, which has the effect of drawing the end B downwardly and the smaller sides 6 9 down upon said sidesf. After the sides have been thus bent inwardly the upper end of the flap O is inserted between the inner faces of the flap B and the sides 6, after which the said end or flap B is bent down until the sides e 9 rest squarely upon the sides f.

By constructing the ends of the box as above described about three-qnarters of the end or flap O is tucked in or inserted between the flap B and sides 6, thereby forming a strong end and preventing any liability of the body of the box twisting or turning. If desired, the outer end of the flap B, which-is free, may be secured down upon the face of the flap O by means of any adhesive substance applied thereto; but I have found this unnecessary, in that as the greater portion of the flap 0 is firmly tucked in between the flap B and sides 0 the smaller portion of the curb B will lie fiat on the flap G, as shown in Fig. 3.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A box formed with the ends or flaps B O, the sidef, and the smaller sides, cg, constructed and adapted to be folded in the manner substantially as specified.
