UNrrnn `STATES PATENT OFFICE.
S. T. MCDOUGALL, OF BROOKLYN, NEV YORK.
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,441, dated October S, 1861.
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, S. T. MCDOUGALL, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVashing- Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, an'd exact. description of the same, reference being had to the anneXed drawings, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation showing part Fig. 2 is a back elevation showing the arrangement of the diiferent parts as they appear with the back removed, and Figs. and 4C show the construction of the frames which are used to act on the clothes.
The nature of my invention consists in the employment of one or more pairs .of frames or the equivalents thereof arranged in a suitable receptacle for the clothes and water,
which frames have a vibrating or reci procating motion imparted to them by suitable mechanism, so as to cause said frames to act on the clothes lo cleanse them, by beating and rubbing, substantially in the manner herein described.. My invention also relates to the peculiar construction of the frames aforesaid. as hereinafter set forth.`
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to the description of the construction and operation thereof.
I make use of a tub A as a receptacle for the clothes and water. I erect suitable standards Bon the sides thereof, in the top of which are formed proper bearings for a shaft O. Said shaft has several cranks 4 4 2 2. The wrists of 4 I are grasped by the upper ends of pitmen D, jointed at 7 to rods E, which rods are attached below by pivots S to the frames F. and the wrists of 2 2 by the upper ends of pitmen G, their lower ends being connected by accommodating joints to frames I-I, which latter are hinged or pivoted near the center of the tub. The rods E have suitable guides 3 near the top of the tub, and said rods are so pivoted to the frames E as to permit an oscillation in a plane contrary to that of t-he vibration of the pitmen when following the rotation of the cranks, and in a direction corresponding to that of the vibration of the frames H. (See Fig. 2. These frames F and H, I usually till with rows of balls, arranged on rods so as to revolve freely thereon, with one or more slats between, with spaces between the slats, or having grooves in the slats. The frames are seen enlarged in Figs. 3 and 4. l
lVhen the machine is to be' operated, lthe clothes are placed in the tub between the yframes and under them, and motion being given to the shaft O by the wheel J or otherwise the frames are :moved u p and down, beating and rubbing the clothes thoroughly and very efficiently.
I usually make oneside of the tub inclined, and form ribs or corrugations thereon, to be used for the purposes of a washboard in cases 'where the mechanical manipulation does not entirely'perfect the cleansing.
The frames H, instead of being two and separate, could be combined in one, and in that case the pivots in the tub might be dis- ,.pensed with, the guides 3 could be varied, and other modifications of partswill suggest .themselves to the expert artisan, and therefore in this invention I do not confine myself to the specific detail of the parts as described, but shall vary them as circumstances may determine, always retaining the same general features. as above set forth.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The employment of the framesF and H, arranged in the tub A and having the reciprocating and vibrating motions imparted to them, respectively, by means of the cranks 2 2 4 4t, through the agency of the pitmen and rods or equivalent mechanism, all arranged and operating substantially in the manner specified. y
2. The peculiarconstruction of the frames, as set forth, Withballs and slats alternately arranged therein, substantially as described.
S. T. MCDOUGALL. Witnesses:
W. W. SHARP, E. HARRY SMITH.
